This is much smaller and less awe inspiring than the Basilica Cistern.  There is an elevator in lieu of stairs if you are mobility challenged.

The light show is every 20 minutes and very well produced.

The tourist ticket price is unfortunately high.

We are glad to have  come here and visit this cistern as well - but if you could only pick one, I would recommend the Basilica Cistern instead.

If you’re looking for a cheaper price for a similar experience as the Basilica Cistern with a touch of light displays and mapping tech, choose the Cistern of Theodosius over in Sultanahmet.

I felt like I was on the set of Inferno, except instead of Tom Hanks, emperor Constantine made an appearance. If you love the light shows at music festivals you’ll love this experience.

It may not be as extensive as the Basilica Cistern but I spent an hour down there and thoroughly enjoyed the Cistern and the light show. Truly unique, 10/10 would recommend!

If you want to enjoy this space without other visitors in it, I’d say go early when they open or towards the end of the day before the exhibit closes - I went with the latter.

Extremely overpriced for what it is.  We paid about $20 USD per person, expecting much more of a light show. Our guide told us the Cistern was small, but we thought the light show would compensate. It did not. We went inside the dimly lit Cistern, watched a mediocre light show for about 20 minutes and left. We assumed when the light show ended the house lights would brighten, but alas no.

Please note several of the review photos others posted are not from the Cistern of Theodosius, they are from the Basilica Cistern which is much larger.  I am guessing just confused tourists.

Skip this place entirely unless you have a coupon that gets you under $3/guest at the most. While the Basilica Cistern is more expensive, it is much bigger and better lit so you can see the Cistern.

The Şerefiye Cistern is an ancient Byzantine-era water reservoir. Built during the reign of Emperor Justinian in the 6th century. The cistern is an impressive feat of engineering, with a capacity to hold around 80,000 cubic meters of water. It has a  unique design and its lesser-known compared to Basilica Cistern. Just 6 minutes from Sultanahmet chamber and no queue :) The light show was amazing and continued for 10-15 minutes. Lots of stairs down but there is an elevator for accessible uses - don’t know if it is working. Better to ask via phone if visitor has any disability.
