Great museum about the history of convict past. There are 3 floors, easily accessible, no entry fee. The audio tour will guide you through the displays, very well presented.

Located at Queens Square, Macquarie Street, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia 🇦🇺.
An absolute Gem of a place, currently a must see for Australians to get more acquainted with our history. We were given a pair of headphones for the audio tour. It detected where we were in the museum as to what we told and it was from several different perspectives including convicts. The memorabilia was fantastic. You could spend hours there. The staff were very welcoming, friendly and patient with our group which included people in wheelchairs, who walked with walkers and other disabilities. The museum is very wheelchair 🦼 accessible as  there was a lift 🛗 to take you to each floor. There’s toilet facilities including disabled toilets. It’s located directly across from Hyde Park and St Mary’s Cathedral. You can walk from St James Railway Station. Parking 🅿️ is not good so I recommend getting public transportation. The tour and access to the Museum is FREE 🆓. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend. A BIG Thumbs Up from me! 👍👍👍

Great museum to learn the detailed history of convict settlers in Australia. The audio guide is very well produced and performed - the narration is triggered by different displays/locations in the museum. It includes several voice actors that recite historical letters, documents, and accounts of the convicts, immigrants, and patients that all lived in the Hyde Park Barracks. Really enjoyed the elaborate miniatures of early settlements. There is also an impressive selection of artifacts such as the convicts' uniforms and chains.

The Hyde Park Barracks museum takes a novel approach to the exploration of the historical site by employing the use of a geolocation based audio tour which works by wearing headphones attached to a device that detects when you enter new rooms or approach exhibits. This allows for a mostly text free space that focuses on audio story telling with visual aids. All together this provides a captivating and authentic experience of life in the barracks. Definitely worth a visit. Tour takes about 1h30. I found the geolocation to be occasionally finicky however it was really busy so that may have played a factor into it.
