What Kurtosh does completely differently to other cake and coffee joints is extremely brave - they hold back on sugar and butter. And they bloodywell pull it off in the baked cheesecake I am sampling today. Less sugar allows the nuttyness & caramelness to shine, from the thin biscuit base to the browned top. The cream cheese is the hero here. It also means I can eat more - not sure if that's such a good thing ;-) The coffee is where they are let down. More crema needed in the day and age of quad ristrettos and single origin depth. 4/5 on the way to 5.

Hmm the wafting smells of sugar, coconut and cinnamon.........such a delight! As we walked in after dinner and because the weather was overcast the store appeared to be dark inside probably due to their minimal lighting. I think they're going for that dark seductive ambiance vibe or I could be way off! After browsing the various collections of cakes (cakes the size you could put your whole face on!) we decided on ye good ole Kurtosh - cinnamon of course although the coconut was a good contender. $7.50 for one and made fresh to order which only took about 5 minutes which we happily sat around to wait for. The interior is an industrial style with exposed brick and dim lighting. As you walk in the cakes and pastries selection is on the left and straight ahead is their coffee station with a massive coffee machine! Down the back to the left is a large communal table for bigger groups etc. Will have to pop by again, as they have cute cups they serve their tea/coffee in and also to try their cookies and cream cake i spied earlier.

Ok ok so I don't really see why there is so much love for the place. It's average at the most. Two things I have to admit it is pretty inside and the coffee's are amazing. I however find the cakes to be pretty meh. They taste below average. I have had better and I have seen better. The tiramisu I had was ok though. Aldi and Coles tiramisu is better though. The service is ok, girls behind counter are rather slow and not very friendly. The barista is amazing. She was alone and she made about 20 coffees in 6 minutes. I was impressed.. Don't think ill be back though..

Ever been stuck between a pug and a sweet place? Such was my dilemma. Had just finished breakfast with my mum when we strolled past Kurtosh. Sweet, sticky, inviting bakery smells washed over us like the pheromones of some great and vengeful donut god. Mum turned into The Flash and disappeared inside, last I saw she was pawing through all the sample boxes trying bites, well, everything. I wanted to go in and order everything but I had Minky with me, snuffling about and straining on the leash to get inside the store. I sat with her a while but the sight of people streaming out into the sun stuffing their happy weekend faces with delights I don't even have names for was too much, and I tied her to a tree and ignored her sad, plaintive whining while I got me some kind of caramel slice loaded up with salted peanuts and ate it while she watched. Sorry not sorry.

Love this place, especially for dessert after dinner out at one of the many restaurants along Willoughby Road, partially due to the great atmosphere. My favourite is the nutella chimney cake ($9.50), best shared with your other half, plus they do good tea in funky little tea pots. The only let down is the wait in the evenings for your chimney cake (if it's busy, around 15 minutes). One night they were close to closing (at 10pm), and took our order but said it would be take-away, including the drinks. As I then finished my tea before our chimney cake was ready, would have been good to not have it take-away style! They could also benefit from a few more seats (it's a tad empty), although I usually manage to find one.

Love this little buzzing bakery. They cut delicious cakes as per the weight or size you want. What's more, the Kürtosh is divine! It's fresh hand-made just in front of you, it's crispy, soft and comes in a variety of toppings. The more traditional cinnamon kurtosh was rolled in sugar and cinnamon. I think I enjoy unravelling them more than eating them, but they're fun and something different. Worth a visit during a lazy Sunday afternoon.

My bf brought back some cakes for me to try. I tried the baked raspberry cheesecake and the cookies and creme cheesecake. The baked raspberry cheesecake was my favourite of the two as it was super creamy and tasted lighter than a New York cheesecake. I also like the crumbly shortbread-like base and the bursts of tartness from the raspberries. The cookies and creme was alright but I thought the texture and flavour was a bit strange. It had a generous amount of cookie pieces though!

This place is quite pricey and the quality of the savoury food (sausage roll and cheese/spinach triangle) is pretty bad. The stuff was overcooked and really dry, for the price I was expecting much better. I know the place is supposed to be known for the desserts, but I'm not really a sweets person (I found the desserts to be pretty average)

My friend took us to the Surry Hills branch a couple of weeks ago and I've been in love with Kurtosh ever since. Luckily for me, this branch in Crows Nest exists and is ideally located near my work. I've been going at least once a week to try something new each time. So far, I've tasted the baked cheesecake, lemon crumble cheesecake, spiced carrot cake, orange and olive oil sponge, cinnamon and walnut and nutella kurtosh. All of them have been really good, except for the baked cheesecake which was a bit ordinary, if not bland. The nutella kurtosh is worth a special mention, the bread is soft and crunchy at the same time and had the perfect amount of nutella and hence did not make the kurtosh overly sweet. My workmate who is a self-confessed cheesecake lover fell in love with the lemon cheesecake and now seems to have a weekly craving for it. The cakes are sold by weight so you can get as little or as big as you want. It's handy if you want a taste of everything without spending and eating too much. They have a selection of samplers as well to help you decide what to get.
