This hotel has amazing restaurants and ambiance everywhere you go. We went to the famous Fondue restaurant and it was the best experience at a Fondue place ever.

Really sad about this one - Rote Wand was close to being the perfect hotel to me, and I was sure when I found it and made our reservation that we would be back again and again. There were many things that were fabulous - the location, deep in the mountains, could not be more stunning or offer a better playground for hiking and running; the pool and yard are beautiful; the kids room is a fabulous asset and offers more than most kids rooms do. But most people book here because of the food - and that was the case for us too - so it’s arguably the most important thing to evaluate against. As a total foodie always traveling specifically to eat the best meal out there, and in love with creative food innovation that enables sustainable consumption, I had big hopes - the hotel boasts about workshops on culinary topics like fermentation; they say the source their ingredients as locally as possible; and they have cooking workshops with some of my very favorite restaurants, like Mochi. In many ways, they delivered - the pastry chef/baker is a total genius and we tasted many exceptional cakes/pastries, and the sourdough bread was outstanding. But on our first night, when we had asked if they could accommodate us being vegan (this is an excellent way to test the skills of a kitchen; if you remove meat and dairy as vehicles of flavor, the chef has to really tap into their skill set and knowledge of salt, fat, acid and heat to make something outstanding; plus, as a restaurant that says they’re focused on the future, we all know eating less meat and dairy is the most important thing for our future); they said they could, but the result was jaw droppingly awful and ruined our entire experience: on our first night, we were served a grocery-store purchased plantbased meat product, served with a bland mix of standard vegetables, and no sauce to speak of. I wouldn’t cook this for myself, let alone travel to a “gourmet hotel” to eat it. I also wouldn’t order this off the menu, but with the food already included in the room, and no menu presented to otherwise peruse, we had no choice. It was so bad we brought it back to the room and gave it to our dog, skipped dessert, and stayed up the whole night talking about to gat frauds they are to say they’re focused on food. The next night we said we would skip being vegan and just go vegetarian, in case that made things more straight forward for them, and the experience was very different - outstanding food (and it was actually mostly vegan). The experience was befuddling, but what was more shocking was that when we explained the disappointment and shock to the staff, no one offered any explanation or recourse. When I made a final comment on the last day, they offered a small refund, but that didn’t make up for our entire stay being ruined by our disappointment and shock that we had traveled 6+ hours only to be served a product made in a factory, which we would expect to be served in a place like TGIFRIDAYS. A few other things were also disappointing- their wine list is on an iPad, which I personally find completely off putting, but it also made it difficult to peruse and enabled their sommelier to bring us a bottle that was more expensive than the one I pointed to, saying he thought I was referring to the next wine in the list (poor form); when I ordered filter coffee we were brought an Americano - not at all the same thing, any coffee aficionado knows; and when we asked for something to go with our aperitif, like nuts etc, we received an eye roll instead of a bowl of nuts. Not what I would expect from a hotel focused on food. All in all, it came close to being excellent, but they have some work to do to live up to who they say they are, and to merit the time, effort, and money to stay/dine with them.

This place is dialed in to having the most relaxing, fun, and gourmet Alps experience.  The location is gorgeous with easy access to skiing and to town (via shuttle).  The food is wonderful, the beds so comfortable and cozy, the spa/sauna/pool clean and lovely.  But the staff is exceptional.  In addition to being incredibly helpful, they are polite, funny, interesting, kind, go above and beyond, and engaging.  Everyone seems very happy to be there and to be part of your experience.  Top notch.  Top notch!  Cannot wait to return.
