Honestly, we were pretty disappointed in the dinner. We came in with high expectations being Michelin recognized.

We’ve been to a few tasting menus in our day and had some thoughts. A lot of it ended up being related to the pacing of the meal- the full dinner course took a little over four hours to complete. We did order the extra plate and had cheeses, but we agreed the time between plates was quite long.

My wife tried the wine list and was left with the impression that the pairings were a little more experimental than refined which is okay, but she also felt they didn’t exactly pair well with the dishes presented. They were too unique and didn’t match the suggested pairing.

The dishes themselves we agreed were good, but none of them ranked for us as great. One thing that we really disliked was that there was sand in 3 of the four mussels we got. We had to spit them out and not finish that plate because it was inedible.

We agreed desert was the best. They gave us a lowkey birthday treat which was absolutely delicious and should be part of every meal.

The atmosphere, service, and overall vibe was great but unfortunately our overall experience was hurt most by the thing we came for… the food.

Michelin level food while feeling the comfort of home. Roots manages to deliver great food without pretentiousness. A must visit on any culinary trip in Ghent.

This is one of the best meals that I have had. Each course was different and fantastic. The most impressive thing, to me, is that they took an ingredient that I generally don't like and avoid (eggplant) and made it one of the best pieces of the meal. Seriously impressive food. If you are spending time in Ghent and don't eat at Roots you are missing out.

Wonderful experience if pricey

We had the one 5 course meal and one 6 course one and split the extra dish. 2 house cocktails and 2 glasses of wine. Total spend was around 200 euro.

Great take on modern cooking, with small but well presented dishes. Bread was delicious and continuously refilled, but more oily than I liked. Original flavour and ingredient combinations in a cosy space and very friendly staff.

Make sure to book in advance, but if you're looking for something different, this is a great option.
