A Disappointing Christmas Getaway with Our Dogs – La Butte aux Bois Falls Short of Expectations

In mid-November, we spontaneously decided to spend a few relaxing days with our two dogs at La Butte aux Bois. The elegant presentation of the hotel and its reputation for exceptional service raised our hopes for a truly special Christmas experience.

Unfortunately, our excitement was significantly dampened upon our arrival on the second day of Christmas: late in the afternoon, we were informed that all of the hotel’s restaurants were fully booked. The only alternatives offered were room service or snacks. For a hotel of this caliber – especially during the festive season – this was unacceptable and left a lasting negative impression on our trip.

What made the situation even more frustrating was that, during the booking process, we had explicitly requested the hotel’s Christmas menu. To our disappointment, we were told at the time that the menu was not yet finalized. While we were advised to book spa treatments early, no mention was made of the need to reserve tables at the restaurants in advance – a critical oversight.

We had been looking forward to a festive Christmas dinner in an elegant setting, but instead, we were left with room service – an option that falls far short of the standards expected at a hotel of this price point and reputation.

We value excellent hospitality and thoughtful service that prioritizes the needs of its guests – both of which were glaringly absent during our stay. This Christmas trip, which we had eagerly anticipated, left us with a disappointing aftertaste. Regrettably, based on this experience, we cannot recommend La Butte aux Bois.

An incredible experience! Not only is the hotel exceptional in every way, but we really loved the geological specimens and the extraordinary jewelry. The spa is also wonderful and every single person that works there holds hospitality and friendliness up to the highest standard.

We had a voucher to spend a night with a Ralf Berendsen experience menu. My husband got this as gift for his retirement.
The high expectations were not met at all.
The rooms are indeed in need of refreshments, tiles are broken, wood is chipped, bedhead had a little tear, paint is damaged here and there…towels and bath-rope rather worn down..this is not what we are used to if we stay at a five star hotel…
The Ralf Berendsen dinner was a total disappointment. The food was ok, but the wine killed the dinner. We did speak with the somelier, about the problem, but he gave us no solution… the problem was that the glasses all had a taste and smell of dishwasher detergent. The somelier agreed to our finding after he tasted and smelled our glases. There was a problem with the dishwasher…We complained with the first wine, then came the second wine and again complained …all had this taste and smell…We were not given proper washed glasses, so we stopped drinking wine, it killed the atmosphere and the dinner experience… and beside of that we still needed to pay for the 2 glasses each so for 4 x25 =100 for wine that was not ok… and what was more, even though the somelier acknowledged the problem he kept going with the glasses in the full restaurant with all the other tables… is this 2 michelin star worthy ??? We are still a bit shaken by the Ralf Berendsen experience, we will not be coming back.. so so sorry…

Where is the old La Butte aux Bois, a classy place with personal approach and respect for the clientele? This is Limburg, …!
You run a 5* hotel and Michelin restaurant so very disappointing, though a perfect spot for the new -unconscious of class- rich.

One of the nicest hotel I have ever stayed.
Traveled extensively all over the world but the attention to detail if perfect, would highly recommend and will definitely return.
