My name is Alex, and I'm from Switzerland. I own my own restaurant and also run a digital agency that helps companies with digitalization. I have several culinary qualifications and have worked as a chef. I've been in the hospitality industry for 20 years and have visited over 1000 restaurants in more than 20 countries. I love exploring and discovering new places.

We were excited to visit Restaurant La Grotte in Corsica. Fortunately, we were able to make a last-minute reservation. However, the signage on the road leading to the restaurant was poor, and the roads were in such bad condition that there was a concern for the safety of our car. This was even more challenging at night due to the poor road conditions and lack of clear signage. So, please be cautious if you don't drive an SUV.

The greeting at the restaurant was friendly and welcoming. It seemed like someone was already waiting for us. The service staff took us to the highest point in the restaurant where we could enjoy the outdoor atmosphere. I highly recommend bringing mosquito spray as there were many of them. The service staff was attentive and very friendly - they truly deserve 5 stars for the aperitif. They even provided us with mosquito spray and someone noticed that the lights of our car were still on and kindly turned them off.

The prices for the aperitif at 22 euros were reasonable, but it was unfortunate that there were no savory snacks like olives. However, the view and the atmosphere were truly stunning, and the restaurant seemed well-designed.

Later, we went into the cave for dinner. The atmosphere there was also quite pleasant. Given that we visited in October 2023, which was off-season, we didn't have high expectations for dinner. Now, onto the feedback for dinner itself: Both of the appetizers consisted of tomatoes, which is unusual in French cuisine where typically no ingredient is used twice in the menu. The dishes were not particularly impressive.

The 5-course menu was served in just 1 hour and 15 minutes, which meant we had hardly any time to digest before the next course arrived. We were told later that we should have informed the service staff, but there were about five different staff members, and it was always someone else at our table. There was no clear host or point of contact guiding us through the evening, which, in my opinion, should be expected for a 5-course menu costing 90 euros.

The main course was disappointing. The meat was tough and not tender, and the accompanying polenta seemed uninspired and lacked flavor. The sauce was also not robust enough. After that, the cheese plate was served, with the explanation that it was off-season. This explanation was not acceptable. The dessert seemed like something a cooking student would prepare, and overall, it lacked the passion of a skilled chef. Additionally, we often had to refill our own wine and water glasses, despite there being plenty of staff. The staff was friendly and polite, but the restaurant still has a lot of room for improvement. It's unfortunate that it's listed in the Michelin Guide. Nevertheless, after providing our feedback, they did offer us complimentary apéritif drinks.

It has been 10 years they had this special way of making you feel like you are not welcome every time you want to book. It is surprising they still have some success though I doubt they are always full as they claim to be. Not a must, just a why not.
