Loved finally making it to La Buvette on a recent trip to Paris. As a lover of natural wines, I had the book about this quaint spot written by their owner. Great small bites and an awesome selection of wines. 

Service was spectacular, too. Really loved the chill vibe! If we are back and in the 11th, I'm certain that we will stop back in!

There seems to be some confusion in the reviews about which establishment this is; there are two restaurants helmed by female chefs in Paris, one named simply "Buvette" (by the American chef Jody Williams; there is also a NYC outpost of the same name) and one called "La Buvette" (this is the correct page for the restaurant operated by Camille Fourmont).

While I love NYC's Buvette, La Buvette is an entirely different sort of restaurant and is my NUMBER ONE recommendation for friends visiting Paris who enjoy natural wine/small plates/a slightly chaotic atmosphere. I make sure to come here as many times as I can whenever I visit Paris, and I've even gone to a La Buvette pop-up in NYC when the chef came last year. I'm definitely a La Buvette groupie.

A buvette is a restaurant that sells wine to go and to drink in situ, along with a selection of small plates. While I hate the ubiquity of the term 'tapas' to describe dishes that are not quite entree-sized, you can think of La Buvette's dishes as basically tapas: smaller portions meant to be ordered in multiple and shared over a bottle of wine. 

The wine selection here is tightly curated and I've never had a glass that I disagreed with -- everything is pretty simpatico if you're into this style of wine, and the staff are quite helpful in steering you toward bottles you might enjoy. In past visits, I've often found myself ordering over half the menu, which is written on a mirror-board on the wall and changes daily. Everything is quite simple, made with excellent ingredients, and quite good. Note: this is not a full-service kitchen, so don't expect an elaborate dinner. Think of this as an appreciation of simplicity and purity of flavor, and you'll have a much better time than if you expect a 10-hour cassoulet or something. Get some cheeses and charcuterie, and absolutely get the big white beans with citrus zest. Savor the flavors. 

While I'd love for this to remain a hidden gem, the secret has definitely gotten out, and it's not really much of a "neighborhood" establishment anymore. Expect a line unless you get there quite early, and note that you won't have any privacy because the space is tiny, and you may end up drinking your wine standing by a tiny corner of the counter. To me, that's part of the charm, and Camille Fourmont has created quite a remarkable place that I find simply perfect. It's a must-visit in Paris!

Great hole in the wall serving delicious French tapas. The server went out of his way to translate the entire menu for us- which was so so helpful and much appreciated! We were able to order the coq au vin which came in this tasty red wine sauce and mushrooms that captured all the flavors beautifully. We followed with the "shepherds pie fish" and while good, wish we would have ordered the beef shepherds pie because that looked fantastic. The only thing I could have done without is the dessert. The apple pie was pretty soggy.

If you can possibly physically fit inside La Buvette, then you absolutely must go. In evaluating whether or not you are able to fit, I encourage you to think creatively about what is a potential surface for your wine-glasses. La Buvette is part of an archetype of French drinking establishment that translates poorly into English, but is essentially a wine store where you can buy wine and drink it there.

La Buvette specializes in the natural and biodynamic wines that are very hip in the United States right now but can be extremely difficult to find. Understanding that Americans may have trouble asking for what they want, the proprietress will entertain relatively specific descriptions of what kind of wines you like, and do her best to satisfy them. All of La Buvette's wines are excellent so you will be sure to enjoy her selection. 

La Buvette is legally required to serve food because of its status as a wine store where you can drink, and the small plates are excellent. We had superb cheeses, plates of small fish, charcuterie, and the bread is of very high quality (but like it's Paris so all the bread you have is excellent by American standards).

La Buvette is a drinking establishment, but you could easily mark it off as one of your dinner locations while you are in Paris. You'll drink luxuriously and it is not too hard to cobble together a full meal from their small dishes (and you'll be glad you did). This is a must-visit in the contemporary Paris wine scene. If you need additional endorsement, while we were there a celebrity chef (who will remain nameless) stopped in and remained for the rest of the night, so this is a place that the experts know and love!

I can't recommend this place highly enough. It's tiny, though, so I'm hesitant to share -- but I'm way too enthusiastic about it not to. This is my first few hours back in the States after a week in Paris that included two trips to La Buvette, if that tells you anything about how much I liked it. 

It's a very small space -- only three tables and two of them only seat two -- but beautifully and artistically decorated (marble countertops, wine bottles on display, huge framed prints of sausage -- need I say more?). The owner is incredibly knowledgable about wine and somehow delivered one of the best French wines I've ever had after just telling her we wanted white, dry and not too fruity. 

Because of licensing, you have to order a small plate of food with the wine -- but thank god, because at least one of those menu items is to die for. The white beans. They are large, meaty, and fresh, doused in some incredible olive oil, topped with lemon zest and served with hunks of bread. We loved them so much we returned on our last night and had two orders. That good.

My only regret is not trying more of the food items because even though it's known for the wine, the owner clearly knows what she's doing in the kitchen, too. Perfect spot to grab an afternoon/early evening drink or snack.

What a cute little place. The lady who owns it was very helpful and patient with me as I have very little French. Good wine selection and the small food plates are a perfect accompaniment. I had Tomme with nettles and rosette du Lyon salami. Will go back next time I am in Paris.

I am not a fan of brunch. It usually seems like a marketing ploy of restaurants or a way to serve food when they would rather be closed. The food is at best mediocre, the service non-existent and people can't seem to get enough, so it is always crowded. So, I was a bit nervous going to La Buvette today. This is a winebar on Rue Saint Maur that is no bigger than some living rooms. The "kitchen" is what they can do behind the bar. I love this place for an aperitif or to buy a bottle of wine. The wine is always interesting and the food bits are always delicious. But brunch?

It was one of the smartest, most delicious and memorable meals I have had in a long time. We sat down at a table no bigger than a cutting board (although we had an ample area along the window for drinks and plates). The owner and hostess, Camille, asked us for drinks and explained what was on the menu that day (no choices, you get what they got). On the table was bread, jam and water. As Camille got our coffee and cider (cidre, which Helmut doesn't like but loved this), we had some bread and jam. (The jam was extraordinary: strawberry, but with something else. When I asked Camille about it, she said it was just strawberry, made by her mother... and I don't like strawberry jam. What is it about mothers and their cooking?).

The plates came almost at once. Brunch was three plates, which were about the size of a large saucer: simple scrambled eggs, simple sweet potato and salad. But what excellent food! The eggs were simple, but cooked to perfection, soft with just the right amount of salt. That sounds like an odd thing to remark, but when was the last time you had eggs with the right amount of salt? Never happens.

The sweet potato was a revelation. Usually cooks emphasize the sweet but here, it was a chunk of sweet potato, onion confit, salt, olive oil, cilantro and creme fraîche. Instead of "sweet" you could savour the texture and other flavors inherent in the starch. It was truly a new experience for someone who doesn't care for sweet potatoes.

The salad had radishes, raw cauliflower, and avocado. The mix of the winter hard vegetables with the soft summer essence of the avocado was truly delicious, with just a touch of an oil/vinegar dressing.

All this served with a scone. It was just a very satisfying meal. The atmosphere of the place is like being in someone's living room. An amazing experience for a cloudy Sunday afternoon. Brava, Camille!

The place used to be a "crèmerie" and the decorator managed to keep the charming vintage looks of the main room (white tiles, old mirors and lights). The place is small (maybe 15 seats) but there is always room at the bar. 
The particularity of this bar is that, due to legal issues, one cannot drink the stunning natural wines without ordering at least one of the very few dishes available. The good news is that these dishes are always excellent (terrines, pata negra ham, cheese etc. ) and usually have an interesting twist to them. 
The owner (and bartender) knows her wines very well. She used to work at Mama Shelter when it first opened in Paris, and then worked at Le Chateaubriand (a culinary must btw, and a 5-to-10-minutes walk away). 
I am very fond of this bar, perfect to start off any evening. The people there are typically 30-somethings, some hipsters but the atmosphere is usually very relaxed.

A fantastic little wine bar in Paris. Camille's passion for the wine she serves is apparent, and the result is a great drinking experience. It's too bad she doesn't yet have a proper bar-license so that people aren't required to buy food in order to drink there.
