I'm not surprised that I'm the first person to review La Fontaine in English - it's far from a tourist spot, and in fact, their French business seems moderate (though sustained). We went here twice while on a recent short trip, and while I usually try to review restaurants in a fairly objective manner, I'll admit that our love for this place may not be entirely rational. Something about the servers and other customers who we met while in here charmed us, and the affordable drinks and delicious snacks didn't hurt, either. Even the gypsy woman who tried to con me out of some money did so in an almost affable way, and no harm was done. Both times we went, we ended up getting free drinks from (once with) the bartender, and their cheeses were surprisingly scrumptious. Though it might not be terribly special, it's warm and friendly and a lot less loud and overpriced than most of the places on the nearby and popular Rue de Lappe. Stop in for a cafe or a drink, and don't be surprised if you make some new friends.
