I have followed different French language courses at Alliance Française Paris over the years and my favorite among all is ‘Cours de Français par les techniques du théâtre’ delivered by Sylvaine Hinglais.

I initially registered for this course in February 2024, and since then I have continuously taken the course every month. Personally, I find this to be the perfect course for people like me who already have B2 level in French and need to practice their ´expression oral’ for Sylvaine’s technique of making us memorize extracts of French plays, is simply genius. I have already enriched my own vocabulary from it being limited to just textbook French to actually knowing the equivalent ´mots d’argot’, ´les expressions soutenues’ et ´le français familier’.

In addition to the course content, I have made some really good friends all coming from diverse backgrounds and I love it how even outside of the course we meet in bars, go together to watch plays, support one another and really create our own circle in Paris. This course for me has been an extremely enriching experience helping me find back my confidence and finding my own place in the beautiful city of lights.

So far quite disappointed in the Alliance Française in Paris - they advertise 2024 back-to-school 2-week courses on their website home page, however when I try to sign up for one, my level (B2) is not available, or there are no dates listed for 2024.

I emailed and heard no response. Then I called which meant staying up until 1am my time. I spoke to someone who said they'd email me back and get me answers, but have not heard anything.

I've taken classes at Alliance Française in two other cities and had such a positive experience - organized, accommodating, and great classes. So quite surprised and disappointed by the Paris Alliance Française - very bizarre they are not actually offering the courses advertised? (and don't seem keen to help me get signed up for something?)

I love the Alliance, and my favorite class is French Through Theater taught by Sylvaine Hinglais. I LOVE it and the class has many repeat students each month because it is so much fun and you learn so much. It is not a course about theater, but a course where you learn vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and a lot about French culture while you use short theater texts. (I want to stress, you don't need to like theater or acting to get a lot out of this class!) It's important to note that this is really a class for level B2-C1, and not a class if you haven't yet studied French grammar.  There's a lot of grammar review but not teaching of new concepts. Again, the class is quite popular and the teacher really knows what she's doing.

I've taken 7 courses at Alliance Francaise in Paris.  Started at the bottom and am now a level B2.  Loved all my courses. My favorite by far, however, was learning French through theater.  This is NOT a theatre course.  They use plays to get you to memorize lines and therefore learn sentence structure, vocabulary, syntax, etc.  It is INCREDIBLY fun and engaging and also very, very helpful in getting you speaking.  My teacher was Sylvaine Hinglais and she is amazing. I highly recommend her.  Her course requires a minimum B1 level but works quite well for B1, B2 and C1.  Fun, engaging and most importantly, great for actually getting you to speak and pronounce words correctly.  None of the other classes provide much opportunity for speaking.  This one is all speaking and almost no grammar rules, etc.  I found it incredibly helpful.

Update: I followed up on the reply and did email again. Several days ago.

Still waiting.

Like many of the other reviews here, I have emailed, called, filled out their website contact form with no response. The receptionist said she was not trained to help me use French professional development funds and insisted I had to enroll via that site. The site in turn gives the AF contact email and number and a name. Seeing that AF replies to all the negative reviews, maybe now they'll reply?
