Left With a Bad Taste in My Mouth

Le Cinq vs Le Bristol - Multi Michelin Star experience


We arrived in Paris two days ago and had our first meal at Le Bristol.  The meal was delightful and flavors wonderful.  Call me a naïve American, but when the check arrived I asked the server if gratuity was included and his response was "you can do whatever you want".  I interpreted that as no gratuity included and left a handsome cash tip.  Needless-to-say, I learned that the $620euro bill was net of services and the additional cash created a gratuity of greater than 30%.  An unfortunate learning experience-that left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Last night we dined at Le Cinq, and although their 2 Michelin Stars is less than the 3 Michelin Stars awarded Le Bristol, I highly recommend it as the preferred destination.

Le Bristol- I ordered the artichoke macaroni and enjoyed every mouthful.  Probably one of the top five first courses I have ever enjoyed.  The whiting was cooked perfectly and was a fine main course, the Chocolate dessert was wonderful. My wife ordered the tomato first course, sole main course and baked cherry dessert.  She felt that Le Cirq beat Le Bristol on almost every course.

Bottom line - if choosing between the two restaurants we recommend Le Cirq

Other notables - We stayed at the Hotel Plaza Athenee and received the most amazing service, everyone we met spoke English and were not in the least bit offended by our attempts at speaking poor French. Although Alain Ducasse's restaurant was closed for the holiday, it was open for breakfast and my eggs were the best I have ever eaten.  Yes, eggs.  The boutique hotel is fantastic and will be the only place we stay in future visits to Paris.
