What a marvellous place! It’s both beautiful and scary. The history of the place has been made romantic due to the well known book but in reality there have been many terrific stories. However this contrast does make this place unique and interesting for visiting. The only difficulty is how to get there. Make sure to check the ferry schedule in advance. Also buy tickets to the castle online to avoid getting stuck in a queue in front of it.

What a fantastic view of the city. Literary importance aside, this is just a fantastic place to visit and relax, looking over the city, the sea, and the islands. We spent a few hours strolling, and about a half hour in the castle. It looks as though the entire place has been either continuously maintained or underwent a major renovation. All the walls around the islands are in fantastic state of repair given their age.

Marseille is such a beautiful city. If you come here, I recommend having Chateau D'If in your to-do list. It is located on a small island. We preferred to buy the tickets in advance, not to wait in a queue. The view is very nice from the harbour to the island and on the way back. It was such an amazing experience! 😊

A great mini excursion to a prison island off Marseille. Dan of Monte Cristo? Go see where it all happened (the true story, which spawned the best seller). Absolutely worth while, cheap and you’ll see Marseille old port from a whole new angle, not to mention the island itself!

We took Le bateau to the island. There are other companies also. Our tickets were 23 E round trip, but you pay 7 Euro to enter the fortress once you arrive. This is the prison that the Count of Monte Cristo was in. There is a lot of information on the author of the book. This was originally a fortress turned prison. Used from early 1500s to the 1940s
