Per giungere alla foce del Roia, nella città di Ventimiglia, è possibile servirsi della rete autostradale, l’A10 Genova Savona Ventimiglia o dalla Francia l’A8. Molto buoni anche i collegamenti ferroviari..Il fiume Roia nasce dal colle di Tenda. Riceve quasi subito l’apporto dei torrenti Refrei e Mesce. Da sinistra, riceve poi le  acque della Levenza, che hanno lambito Briga e, da destra, quelle della Beogna, che provengono dai Laghi delle Meraviglie, a San Dalmazzo.Giunge poi al comune di Fontan, dove riceve da destra il Cairos e da sinistra il torrente Bendola, per poi formare le gole de Saorgio, una gola dove la corrente aumenta di turbolenza. A Breil sur Roya, viene sbarrato da una diga. A Fanghetto, entra in Italia. Da destra, dalle falde del colle Magliocca, riceve le acque dell’affluente più importante, il torrente Bevera*. Attraversa poi Ventimiglia, dividendone il moderno centro città, a sinistra, dal quartiere della Marina San Giuseppe, a destra, dove sfocia poi nel Mar Ligure. Costituisce un paradiso per i pescatori di trote in particolare. Tuttavia, la pesca viene regolata da varie norme. Il fiume è poi una fonte di elettricità grazie alla costruzione di centrali idroelettriche all’inizio del secolo XX. Vi sono ben 7  centrali idroeletriche nella valle:Le sue acque sotterranee nel tratto terminale  sono utilizzate per uso potabile oltre che irriguo, da centinaia di migliaia di persone.
