We were on the lookout for a good breakfast spot in Munich and came across California Bean, which looked promising online. Arriving on a busy Sunday morning, we expected the place to be packed, and it was. We were seated at a table in the back, which, unfortunately, didn’t live up to the rest of the restaurant’s aesthetic. The table had cheap plastic flowers and a dirty paper tablecloth, which felt out of place and set a disappointing tone.

The real surprise came when the food arrived. As someone who regularly reviews brunch and breakfast spots, I found the food to be just okay—it tasted fine but didn’t live up to the price point. The issue wasn’t the food itself but rather the overall value. At these prices, I expect an exceptional experience, not just in terms of the food but also the presentation, cutlery, and ambiance. Unfortunately, plastic cups and cutlery don’t cut it at this price level, especially when compared to other establishments offering better quality for the same price.

The one redeeming factor was the staff, who were super nice and attentive, trying their best to make our experience pleasant. But for me, the hype surrounding this place is hard to understand. While the food was decent, it certainly wasn’t worth the premium price tag.

If you’re looking for good food, California Bean delivers, but if you’re expecting top-notch quality and value for money, you might leave feeling underwhelmed.

I had a Club Sandwich which was really good, the portion was big it should be more than enough. Pancakes looked very good, but I didn’t order any. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Expect a queue when you get there for at least 20 mins, you cannot make reservations and they only accept cash.

Be prepared to queue as this joint is quite popular. Tried the egg waffle with crispy chicken and scrambled eggs ( average), red velvet pancake ( quite nice and flavourful though the pancake was a little dry) and omelette (average).

Me and my wife found this place by chance. Our hotel was located across the street. We were just looking for a place to have coffee and some nibbles. This cafe was well above our expectations. We came here for breakfast every morning during our stay in Munich.

I do not think that you are going to find any place better than this for breakfast. They have an amazing selection of items on their menu. And they have daily specials. I have enjoyed every bite of food I had here.

It has a cosy atmosphere that feels like you are having breakfast at your modern grandmas home. The lady (sorry I forgot the name) who manages the place is doing a wonderful job. She treats everyone like her guests.

Definitely recommended, change your route to pay a visit!

My friend Ellie and I visited this place on our travel to Germany to see Adele. We was greeted with the wonderful Evelyn who was so kind and helpful. The food was delicious and was pleasantly surprised to see an adele themed menu, how amazing!
Thank you California bean and Evelyn, we will definitely be telling people in England about this lovely place!
