One of the few gothic churches in Rome. I was astounded at how spacious and lavish the church was. Entering an unassuming, rather simple facade, you are at once greeted by towering arches, sculptured and mosaics, with beautiful paintings and stained glass. There are several famous statues including that of Michelangelo's the Risen Christ. Absolutely stunning church, near the Pantheon.

A hidden treasure in Rome, this church is where you can find Michaelangelo's Risen Christ statue.

Of course there's more than just this statue but it's definitely the main attraction. We only spent about 30 minutes here but it was well worth it.

An absolutely beautiful basilica! Free entry. Easy access.  Not insanely busy like so many other sites in Rome.  A definite must see if you’re in the area.

The mysterious back entrance (under some pope's massive funerary monument) we used lent a whole different impression to the church, which is considered "Gothic" here in Rome. Interior showing lots if very vivid cold  as well as an original Michelangelo statue.

On a piazza behind the Pantheon, marked by  an elephantine obelisk, is a plain understated church facade. As is often the case with catholic city churches the interior is anything but plain. Every surface is painted or gilded. Only the marble columns and panels are spared the brush.
The ceiling is a stunning blue and the side chapels are awash with frescos.
