One of the hidden gems of Rome, that not too many people visit because it has been opened to the public for the last years. This is the Golden Palace of Emperor Nero, which was destroyed and buried by his successor Emperor Trian. A great site to visit because the fact that this place was buried for over 2000 years in soil preserved it, and you can walk in the rooms that Emperor Nero used to live. In one room, you even wear googles and get show you how your surroundings used to look when the Palace was intact. I would highly recommend

After 3 tries, I finally managed to visit the ''lost'' Nero's palace. And what a sight ! The size of the palace is huge, the height of the ceilings incredible and the fresquos that have survived worth the trip to Rome.

But beware, book very much ahead of your trip!! Tickets go away very fast. Your last chance will be a non-guided visit and you have to buy ticket the same at the closeby ticket office for the one of the 2 visits at 13.00 or 17.00.

This was the most surprising thing I saw in Rome and I’ve visited the city maybe 10 times
Hard to believe that an entire palace was buried just to create the foundations for the Trajan Baths but this luckily preserved a good deal of the palace for our generation to see.
New parts of the buried palace are being revealed by archaeologists even now.
Recently completed works have provided better access (DDA ramps and lifts), great interpretation signage and a VR experience recreating the palace in all its original splendour.
Many original frescoes are visible on the walls and ceilings - the discovery of which in the C16th inspired Rococo decoration styles.

I was unaware of Domus Aurea, my daughter booked the tour.
What can I say but WOW!
Do yourself a favour.
To see Emperor Nero’s palace, as it was back in 64AD.
It is still an archeological site so excavation works are still underway.

Cool historical and archeological site!  The VR part of the tour is very fun and informative, as it gives you a great sense of what the site was like when it was intact.
