Well if you're in Rome and you walk by it, it's interesting. But there are lots of columns and obelisks in Rome and although you can see it for free, it doesn't seem particularly remarkable with the naked eye and I think most people just give it a glance and walk right by.  I would suggest to appreciate the detail in the column to bring a pair of binoculars or camera with a telephoto lens and take some pictures of it close up and you can appreciate the amazing detail on the column.  For all the interesting marble and stone reliefs that you'll find in say the Capitoline or the Palazzo Massimo museums, there's very little that is superior to what you'll find on Trajan's column. The problem is seeing it and in enough detail to appreciate what's there.  As a retired Classics Professor, I can tell you there is interesting discussion on how the ancients would have been able to appreciate this detail, but that's neither here nor there for the average person.  We have a way a fairly easy way to view the detail on it; simply a close-up with your phone camera is not going to suffice.  Again, bring those binoculars or your favorite Canon camera with a telephoto lens.  It is very beautiful and for the storytelling on it, there's almost no comparison anywhere from the classical world.  And if you go into the Forum, you'll see there are fixing up and improving the visitor experience in there every year. So it's well worth your visit, although if you're photographing it with a telephoto lens, you might as well do it from street level for free.

There’s so much history and knowledge to take in.

It’s simply unbelievable it still stands and all credit to all people involved in the restorations over the centuries .

Trajan’s Column is one of those landmarks in Rome that you can easily walk past without realizing just how incredible it is—but every time we pass it, we make sure to stop and take a proper look. It’s not just a towering monument; it’s a 30-meter (98-foot) tall history book carved in stone.

Built in 113 AD to celebrate Emperor Trajan’s victory in the Dacian Wars, the column tells a detailed story in a continuous spiral of carvings that wrap around its surface. If you look closely, you’ll see Roman soldiers building forts, crossing rivers, and marching into battle, while Emperor Trajan himself appears multiple times, overseeing the campaign. The level of detail is astonishing—you can even make out individual expressions on the soldiers’ faces!

Originally, there was a statue of Trajan on top, but today, there’s a statue of Saint Peter, added in the 16th century. It’s a reminder of how Rome has always built upon its past, layering history over history.

It’s easy to walk by without giving it much thought, but we always recommend taking a moment to really look at it. It’s one of the best surviving examples of Roman propaganda and storytelling, carved in marble nearly 2,000 years ago. If you’re visiting the Forum or Piazza Venezia, make sure to stop and appreciate this masterpiece—you won’t regret it!
