Beautiful small island, ideal for a half-day trip in spring or summer. It is a must to visit Palazzo Borromeo and its gardens (tickets are available also online). The visit lasts about 2 hours, depending on your speed. After the visit you can exit from the gardens and have lunch in one of the restaurants, or an ice cream. You can join a visit to another island, but pay attention to the boats time table, since last travel is at 18 about. I suggest a visit in spring in order to see blooming of roses and other flowers. There is also an hotel if you want to sleep on the island (book it in advance!). If you do not want to pay the visit to Palazzo Borromeo and its garden, or to eat something, I think that one hour on the island is more than enough, since there are only few small streets and few shops to visit.

This place is astounding. Definitely tour the inside & get a guided tour as all the rooms are over the top & it is mind bending to stand in the bedroom & see the gigantic bed where Napoleon & Josephine slept when they were visitors. The grounds are beautiful & the white peacocks put on a show for us. You buy a ticket to get a boat ride to the island & hang onto it as you need it to get off the island to go back.

The palace and the gardens are absolutely worth a visit. If you first go to Isola madre I recommend to buy the bundle so you can visit both gardens (one Italian and one English style - both beautiful in different ways).

Stop at Isola Pescatori for lunch.
There are a lot of ferries/small boats but they have specific running times for pick-ups, so always listen to the boat driver. If you do all three islands and you don’t feel like rushing, 6-7 hours are best. We did them in 5 and I had to keep checking the time.
