Ornellaia is one of the top wine producers in Toscana. Last week I had the opportunity to visit their facilities and taste some of their premium wines. As opposed to many other wine producers in the region, Ornellaia actually benefits from a sea-side climate since it is so close to the Mediterranean shore. Highly recommended for both wine-tasting and observing their production process.

We booked a visit to Ornellaia as we were keen to visit one of the big famous wineries of Bolgheri. I didn't have high expectations, as we knew it was expensive and commercial but couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. €100 each for tour and tasting and worth every penny. Svetlana was our guide and we were early and she greeted us and spoke with us until the rest of our small group of 7 had arrived. She showed us the vines and then we got in a very nice executive minibus for a drive to the winery. The winery was stunning and the grounds beautiful. Loved all the art and the tour of the facilities was great. We were lucky to them bottling and it was fascinating. Then the wine library that again was a beautiful space. We returned to the welcome/shop parking and then went to another beautiful room in a nearby building for our tasting. It was all set up beautifully with lovely stemware, a notebook, pencil, crackers, and of course the 6 wines. All very generous measures. We had a great group and we're all having a great time. We weren't rushed and we were made to feel very special. Thank you Ornellaia and Svetlana for making this a really thoughtful and special visit.

An exceptional visit with lots of art

The visit has been hosted by a young sommelier from Sardegna who introduced us to the property, vineyards, culture and wines of Ornellaia.

The tour was 100€ per person and absolutely worth it.

The best winery tour I've had so far. Ornellaia's property is amazing. It perfectly combines the modern large-scale production with the beauty of nature. Its art project (Vendemmia d'Artista)  is also incredible - whole winery's area is full with numerous wonderful art pieces.
The wines are outstanding as well.

This review is meant to help other visitors and wine buyers, not to judge the quality of the Ornellaia wines. I just went to the vineyard with my family in order to buy a bottle or two of wines we already knew. Doing a wine tasting as well would be appreciated, such as is possible in other vineyards located on same street. However, when ringing the bell next to the closed gate, we were informed they do not sell their wines directly to customers without them doing a guided tour of the location. Which other reviews say costs around 100 euro pp. We proceeded to leave the premises because our goal was to buy wines and perhaps try a new one, but not actually do a long guided visit. Leaving with a sour taste in my mouth, I do not judge their wine, which is of good quality, I do judge their inability to host visitors that want to buy/taste their products without a very expensive visit. Hope this helps other future visitors!
