Truly a 5 star luxury experience! I stayed here for my own stay and have sent clients here. They are always blown away as was I! The grounds are stunning, the view impeccable, and the staff is so wonderful. I enjoyed walking the grounds, seeing the olive trees and buildings. I love that you can always go truffle hunting from here. We also did a cooking class, which isn’t something I recommend as we had to ask to actually eat the food we cooked—maybe that’s changed. The history and architecture here are like staying in a place back in time. If you are looking for a true luxury escape in the Tuscan countryside, this is it!

I recently stayed at Castel Monastero and was impressed by the peaceful vibes, lovely weather, and serene natural surroundings. It’s a beautiful escape into quiet nature, but a few aspects left me disappointed.

For a five-star hotel, the service was below expectations, lacking the attentiveness and ease I anticipated. The room keys are a hassle—heavy and overly complicated, making it feel like a puzzle every time you try to unlock your door. Being in a rural area, insects are definitely present, which is something to keep in mind.

The pool area looks appealing, but October’s cooler temperatures made it hard to fully enjoy. I imagine the experience would be much better in summer when swimming would be more inviting. Overall, while the atmosphere is relaxing, there’s room for improvement to meet five-star standards.

Sorry but this is not a 5 star hotel.  The only reason it even gets a 3 star is because of the buildings, view, food.

But please let me explain.

The hotel itself is breathtaking and our room is top notch, the place is beautifully kept on so many levels.  The food is great, though not much seafood which seems odd.  This place is romantic and picturesque full of history.  Amazing right?  What a spectacular find!  And the gardens, amazing.

But.

There are some pretty notable misses that make this not a 5 star place, sorry.

The staff

Friendly, yes.  But not over the top helpful.  Not really proactive.  The pool, spa area closes very early. 6:30PM and was the worst of the bunch.  They start closing up pretty quick but the staff do not come by ever to check on you to see if you need anything, drinks  refresh, new towel, even to make even the slightest conversation at all.  It is like everyone there is just told, do your work, avoid the guests at all costs and do not smile.  Even if you want to stay by the pool later, the lights are all off and they rope it off to discourage later visiting.  (the pool spa area is a little bit of walk but a beautiful walk).  Staff will not ask how you are enjoying your stay, your day, your vacation, if there is anything you need....

I asked for an iron, they said that it is not allowed and you can only send out for it to be done next day.

A wasp nest around the main pool and I asked twice about someone spraying it but it was not done during our days.

Pool tiles on the vanishing pool need to be fixed, they did fix the ladder though.

Fine dining not available Sunday and Monday.

The gym is outside, which is kind of nice but everything coated with a layer of dust and just no one bothering to attend it.

Behind the bar at pool is just a junky pile of boxes, etc. and the staff are really just happy chatting amongst themselves.

Key for room very difficult to use.  There is a trick to opening my room with the key.  And I had to learn the trick.  Let me say again, I had to learn the trick to get the key to open my room!  And that is on me to figure out how you need to push it in and push it extra hard to turn while holding the handle.

Sounds nit picky, there is more but these are the reasons why it is NOT worth 5 Stars.

A charming and beautiful hotel, beautiful and large rooms and a very helpful staff, they took care of us as guests in an exceptional way: starting with the reception, the parking attendant, Evelyn who is in charge of breakfast and her staff and the spa staff.
We had a great time and would love to return to the hotel in the future

Had an amazing stay at Castel Monastero, gorgeous room and welcoming staff. Thank you Sonia for the upgrade! Also had a fantastic dinner last night at the stunning and unique La Cantina restaurant. The wild boar was the best Julia had in a while. Delicious food served by Chef Luigi and his team and personal service from Samuele took our dinner to the next level. Looking forward to coming back next year. Ciao Simon and Julia.
