BED BUGS!! Don't stay here if you want to be covered in nasty red spots! I spend a couple of night in the hipstel and was completely covered in bed bugs bites. I found a bed bug on my matras. Took it to the reception and showed them. Told me to contact the manager. He did nothing with this information. Didn't want to compensated us for the horrible experience. Even if you don't take the bed bugs in to account it's noisy warm and not clean at all. Worst place I ever slept and I slept a night on a train station. Don't go here!!

The Hipstel is located in central Barcelona about 4 Metro stops from the train station. The direction provided on Hostelworld,com is very clear and right on. The hostel is located on the second floor, upon arriving the giant door out front, theres a bell panel with a large sticker on a first lower button with "The Hipstel" on it. Ring it and the receptionist will buzz you in, if no one answers, just wait a couple of minutes and ring again. There's an elevator as well as stairs (which ever you prefer to use) Check in is at 2pm, however, if you arrive early, the kind staff will accommodate luggage storage even a nice hot shower if you need one. Hercules and Claudia are awesome, their friendly welcome and accommodations are very much appreciated while in Barcelona. Lockers are available in each rooms, silence after 1am, 5 shower stalls in a common area (both genders), four toilets, small kitchen, large common area for socializing and a small outdoors smoking area with chairs and tables. It is right around the corner from the Main Street Passeig de Gracia and short 10 minute walk to the main attraction Placa de Catalunya and La Rambla. WIFI ID and password is available inside a picture frame at the front desk hung on the wall. There's a 24/7 staffing assistance available and no curfew at this hostel. I had a very good experience with this hostel while I was in Barcelona and Hipstel accommodated my every need and even over and beyond,

Worst hipstel I've ever stayed in. We put our valuables in the locked room as instructed by the receptionists and they magically disappeared the next day, including computers, cameras, and passport. The hostel is not starting an insurance claim, it took weeks for us to talk to the owners who still refuse to take responsibility, juan at the front desk first said he was a manager then just a receptionist and refuses to give us insurance information that is real (I've called the insurance to ask for the number and it does not exist). No one is taking responsibility. This room is where guests are told to keep their valuables because only the receptionists are supposed to go. Also there's bed bugs, the conditions of the hostel are horrible, it's very old and very dirty. Avoid at all costs!!!!

Upon arriving I was told that check-in was between 1-2, no big deal, they stored my bag and they control the storage room (which I prefer). I left and came back around 145 and was asked to wait until 2, no biggie. 215 I was told it would be at least 30 more minutes, I left and came back later that evening. It turned out that they were finishing refurbishing the room I was going to stay in, they were literally building my bed when I showed up. Also, they were in the middle of changing a mixed four shower room and mixed four toilet room into two 2/2 rooms, one each for males and females. This meant that we were down to two showers and two toilets for all males and females, I'm sure it'll be a lot better once it's completed. Aside from these issues during my visit, this place isn't bad. There's free wi-fi which works best in the common areas and not so good in the rooms. There's also free breakfast to include coffee, bread/toast, cheese, spreads, fruit, and cereal, not much but not bad. There are fridges to store food/drink in and a decent little kitchen, the common area is open, and there's a smoking area outside just off of the common area. The location is pretty central, I found it easy to walk everywhere I wanted to go. Linen is included, towels are €2. I met a lot of good/young people from various countries and had a really good experience. Overall I would recommend this place despite my initial reception and the construction that was going on.

The Hipstel seemed like a very attractive option for a traveler spending a few days in the city - it seemed like a cool place to meet other young travelers to tour the city and it was an affordable price. The staff were all pretty friendly and helpful but very much so lacking professionalism. The first floor, kitchen, dinning area, and the common areas were all nice and kept clean. From my experience of being in other guests' rooms the rooms are big and typically have 6 beds/room. The room I was staying in however was very small, slept 6, had no working fan, and we were unable to open our window due to the fact a sewage vent was very inconveniently located by our window... It was pretty awful. Had I not stepped into other rooms and spent time in the common area this place would have gotten a single star, but I know my stay was unique and most of the rooms are much better than room 202. I would highly recommend asking for a different room if you show up and are offered unit 202.

The staff are really friendly and helpful. My friends and I only booked one night here, but decided to stay longer in Barcelona. The Hipstel was fully booked, but the staff helped us find another hostel nearby for cheap. It's a cozy hostel. Centrally-located. Within walking distance: metro, bus, Las Ramblas, City Center. The kitchen is nice and the common area is open, comfortable and has a lot of natural lighting. Free coffee 24/7 - nice single cup machine. Free breakfast is served every morning from 8-10 am - toast, butter/jam, cheese, juice and milk, oat cereal, whole fruit, crackers, etc. One of the woman who worked there made a breakfast quiche that morning - a decent slice for 2 euros.

The Hipstel was alright. Staff was friendly. While we were there we has booked a private 4 bedroom room but we're placed in a 6 bedroom. No big deal though as no one else stayed. Our room had a window into an alley which reaked of sewage and garbage. We also has no electricity for a couple hours and had to get them to fix it. Overall it is an okay hostel.

​The Hipstel seemed like a pretty standard hostel, and the common areas are very pretty (and so is the biggest shared room which I spent one night in, huge ceilings and lots of light), except that after a week there my laptop was stolen along with my emergency money. It was left in a padlocked suitcase (because the lockers didn't work), in my locked 6-person room. My friend's bags and locker had been rummaged through. The person who did it had time to pick the lock and felt comfortable enough to go through everything in my bag, leaf through books, rearrange electronic cords. This wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't at least the third theft of the week. The staff were almost entirely unhelpful. I felt totally disrespected and hopeless because it was clear that nothing was being done for me, at all. When the manager arrived, he didn't give me so much as an apology for my trouble--he just pointed me towards the police station. People familiar with the hostel suspect that the theft is an inside job, which would make sense because there were only a couple other people staying in the room with me. Whether or not the staff steal, though--they are in and out of the bedrooms at all hours of the day, there are so many of them it's hard to keep track, and the place feels more like a hangout spot for the staff than somewhere trying to provide service to guests. All of this made me feel uncomfortable, especially considering all the theft (even before it affected me personally). For example, I found it annoying that you could not go outside onto the terrace or use the kitchen after 11 p.m. because of "quiet time", but this didn't stop the staff from making tons of noise and using the terrace to smoke joints (right outside the window to my room) until dawn. I'm 18 and I like to party, but this struck me as unfair (especially when I was dying for a cigarette after coming home late). I wouldn't recommend staying here if you value a sense of security. I have stayed in hostels before and know that bad things happen, but I've never stayed anywhere where everyone sleeps in their jackets with their backpacks on their chests. My friend and I kind of dreaded coming back at night and we weren't sad to leave. I don't mean to moan but I found it surprising that almost no reviews for the Hipstel bring up all the theft, even though it happens several times a week. I think it's only fair to mention it before people book their stay here.

I would not recommend this hostel at all!!! We payed 80€ per night for a 2 room bedroom and the air conditioning didn't work all stay long ( and we stayed for a whole week) and the staff didn't even tried to fix it they just offered us a free meal for the evening (worth 5 €). The broken air conditioning wouldn't have been that bad, if we were able to open the window and let fresh air inside but there was just a small air funnel. That's the reason we had hardly daylight in our room! Besides my friend got really sick after a couple of days because the air in the funnel was really moldy and humid because on the other side of the funnel there were the bathrooms. And the bathrooms were really disgusting! There was fungi and mold all over the place!! Usually I don't have high demands. On my last europe tour I also spend lots of nights in train stations or without a roof over my head at all but i would prefer that because i didn't had to pay 40 € per night there! And it is great that breakfast is included but i would expect more than toast and 3 different kinds of mamelade. But lets mention also some positive things. The hostel is located very central (Just 3 minute walk to the metro)! and the dining room with the kitchen is very comfy. I don't know if other rooms are better and you sure meet awesome people here but I would definitely never ever go back to his hostel!
