Our stay at The Principal Madrid Hotel was a mix of experiences. The good - The location of the hotel is fantastic, it's central to everything, really couldn't choose a better location. Most of the staff were very friendly and clearly wanted to help, but language issues (my lack of Spanish and their English) made this difficult with all but a few staff members.
The bad - we ate one dinner in the hotel restaurant and unfortunately it was quite horrific. With the exception of the wine, nothing was nice. Neither of our two starters or two mains were nice, either being cold, tasteless or simply quite odd. We raised this at the time with the manager and were gifted a dessert and due to circumstances and wanting to have a nice time we accepted this, but under any other condition we would have complained more and likely refused to pay for the food as it was that bad. Our room, though nice did have couple of issues. One side of our mattress had a dip in it, where clearly the mattress is giving up. Not a particularly nice feeling for sleep. The bathroom was also rather odd, in that it was a shower within a bath but which is contained behind a solid, blacked out glass wall. The shower head leaked and due to the positioning of everything it did feel awkward getting in and out of the shower, feeling like it would be quite easy to slip whilst doing so.
In summary, the hotel is sufficient but I am unsure who awarded it the 5 stars, it did not meet our expectations of a 5 star hotel by some margin.
Finally and most significantly, due to the poor communications when being shown to the room we consumed some of the chargeable consumables. Only two tea bags per day in the room are included in the room fee. Everything else is charged as an extra. This is fine if and when known up front but when having been told by the hotel staff that these things are included it was surprising to be billed for these. Again, once this was discussed it was agreed to be taken off our bill at checkout, but, once we got home 6 hours later we discovered the hotel had again charged us for these items which left the whole experience of staying at this hotel rather tainted.

Very friendly staff, great location and lovely ambiance.  We forgot our phone charger and by the time we got to the room after a welcome drink the team had dropped one off for us.  Had a drink in the bar and the service was very hospitable, we didn't eat at the hotel but the restaurant looked great.  Would definitely stay again.

We had two wonderful stays at The Principal this fall. The hotel is charming. The service is excellent. The public spaces are beautiful.  The rooms are modern and stylish with very comfortable beds good bath products and amenities, although the less expensive rooms are a little small. The breakfast is fabulous. And the location is great. Easy walking distance to everything. We travel to Madrid frequently and will probably always stay there from now on.

Me and my wife have been planning a trip to Madrid for a couple of years. We wanted to see the end of the welter España when we arrived at our hotel, we were pleasantly surprised the service was top-notch. When they showed us to our room,  room was perfect and we decided to go downstairs and get us a snack and a drink before we start exploring Madrid the rooftop isn’t excellent place to have a snack and beer The view was great. The time trial of the professional bicycling race called the Welda España went right in front of our hotel. If you decide to stay here, make sure you have the breakfast. Excellent coffee, wide variety of fruit very sweet fruit.

Fantastic hotel. Stayed 3 nights and cannot fault the service from reception and concierge staff, room quality and the cleanliness and location of the hotel. If I return to Madrid in future there is no doubt that I will stay at The Principal hotel. Well done to all staff and thank you.
