I really, truly, wanted to like this place - but I have to be honest: the meatball sub was incredibly disappointing. A picture is worth thousand words, but long story short: there were only 5 (FIVE!) tiny meatballs on the whole “large” sub, which was 150kr. All of the sauce was also completely absorbed into the bread by the time I ate it. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect a bite of “meat” with every bite of a sandwich. In the photo I’ve posted, I took two bites of nothing but bread before even getting close to a meatball, which prompted me to open the sandwich to see what was going on.

The meatballs were good. The bread was nice. The sauce and cheese were also fine but there wasn’t nearly enough of it.

Maybe swedes aren’t familiar with meatballs on a sandwich, but that’s not an excuse to call this one.  A single Google image search of “meatball hero” should be enough education. We deserve better!

I understand this business is new and I love to support new businesses, but this is not the way. I’m happy to remove this review if I hear they turn things around!

I tried both the Meatball hero and the Aubergine Parm. My friend tried the Osso Bucco. All three were excellent. The bread was soft and toasted just right, the meat was full of flavors, and the cheese added a comfy, gooey texture to the meal. Will come back again to taste the rest of the menu!

I visited Dubblar Deli after discovering them on TikTok.
I still remember when I first moved to Sweden my disappointment with cold, open, fridge-stored sandwiches, so seeing we finally have hot sandwiches (proper ones) here really caught my attention. As a New Yorker, I've been craving a good, saucy meatball sub.

Located in the Hötorget food court near Systembolaget, Dubblar Deli has a clean and simple vibe—nothing fancy, just like a classic deli.

We ordered the Osso Bucco and, of course, the meatball sub. Here’s the breakdown:

Meatball Sub: Unfortunately, this was a letdown. The sauce was overly tomato-y and needed to be cooked down to bring out that rich, sweet marinara flavor. It lacked complexity and felt one-dimensional.
The meatballs were too dense; a good meatball should crumble easily, but this had more of a Swedish meatball consistency rather than an Italian one, and the herbs overpowered the flavor. As for the cheese, I had high hopes for a gooey melty experience, but it turned out to be rubbery and not really melted. Overall, the flavors didn’t harmonize, and the textures were disappointing. I’d rate it 3 out of 10, not a good meatball sandwich and not even close to a New York meatball sub.

Osso Bucco: Now, this was a winner! The meat was incredibly tender and packed with flavor, though perhaps a bit too salty, which is common in Scandinavian cuisine. The gremolata added a wonderful layer of acidity that complemented the richness of the meat. The highlight was the delicious broth for soaking, reminiscent of an authentic birria taco but in sub form. Overall, it was excellent, 9 out of 10, only slightly docked for saltiness. I’ll definitely be back for this.

The bread deserves a mention as well, soft and slightly sweet, almost with a buttery taste. Delicious!

As for prices, it’s Sweden, so yes, it’s overpriced, but in line with Stockholm price standards.

I’ll be back to try the Aubergine Parm and hope the meatball recipe has improved by then. I look forward to sharing more insights about this place!
