We had a wonderful stay at Hotel Alpina. The place is beautiful, the service was excellent, and the hotel itself was truly lovely. However, I’d like to mention one issue we faced during check-out. Since we are a large family, the billing process was a bit confusing. The invoices were mixed up with incorrect room numbers and ski/gear rental dates. When we pointed it out, the response was somewhat dismissive, saying it wasn’t a big deal. This made the check-out process longer and more complicated than expected.

Other than that, everything was great, and we truly enjoyed our time at the hotel.

I am genuinely appalled by my experience at the Alpina.

The hotel is truly lovely and despite multiple small issues I encountered during my stay -primarily related to house keeping and their lack of attention to detail- I would have rated my stay as excellent.

However, the behaviour I encountered today by the front desk manager and her team is appalling and I will never be staying at the Alpina again!

I went to the reception early in the morning (around 10am) as my friend was leaving earlier than me. She paid half the bill and I specifically asked the front desk to keep the bill open as I will be checking out later at 16:00. This was one of the benefits of my booking with Virtuoso. No objection was raised and I returned to the room to sleep as I was feeling unwell.

They called me at 12 (waking me up) to ask if I need help with my luggage. I explained that I will be checking out at 16:00 as previously agreed. At that point I was told that this is not possible and I will need to leave the room ASAP.

I protested especially given that I was feeling unwell and I needed at least until 2 when I had a massage. I also explicitly pointed out that I was not feeling well and I had a fever. To my surprise they did not offer any assistance even by way of sending a butler or member of the housekeeping team to assist in packing.

Where it becomes even more unbelievable, they queried whether I should be keeping my message because “I could put members of their team at risk”. I had fever due to a medical condition (not common cold) and that is my private medical information one that I shall certainly not be interrogated about from hotel staff!

Horrendous experience!

Came here during the holidays and the property is exceptional. Gstaad itself is a postcard town that is a calm, luxury appointed ski destination. The Alpina is one of the nicest properties I visited in Switzerland. The hotels interior architecture is mesmerizing, utilizing large boulders and massive logs to create a luxurious cavern lodge like atmosphere. During Christmas the dimly lit lounge and bar are adorned with fragrant evergreen trees and greenery, along side a crackling wood fireplace and live music.

It’s a destination property and you won’t be disappointed, worth the steep price tag? Perhaps for a night or two—make sure you utilize the spa and facilities to their fullest. This is no property to book and just sleep and leave.
