The castles of Bellinzona are absolutely beautifully and very well maintained. There is a lift to take you up to the grande castle or you can walk, we saw more than one ways to go up. The views of the mountains are stunning and you can see the whole city and the castle in the opposite cliff. Take your time up there to enjoy, although if it’s windy it’s very cold. Recommend it!

Love that we stopped on our way to Lugano from Zurich. Will need to go back to explore more of the compound. It was so peaceful and captivating that we decided to explore slowly, to take it in, rather than rush to see it all. It was beautiful, surrounded by natural beauty, and wow, it provided for stunning photographs. History buffs would love the audio tours.

We stopped in the famous Bellinzona for lunch and to explore its three UNESCO World Heritage castles. Castelgrande, Castello di Montebello and Castello di Sasso Corbaro and the town wall formed an ancient defense system that controlled the route to two important alpine passes. The castles themselves are partly in ruins, but still impressive. Castelgrande has interior parts that you can explore. The castle walls offer wonderful views of the surrounding valley. The old town of Bellinzona is small, compact and worth a visit too.
