I have visited Zermatt six or seven times in my ski life which has spanned 30 years. It’s this bar that I tell all my friends about as one of the most unusual finds I have ever come across. Firstly it’s situated in one of the most atmospheric streets I have ever seen but only just off the Main Street. The Ancient wooden buildings suspended on mysterious stone mushrooms just add to the time travel. Just then through the evening mist you notice what looks like a softly lit modest bar sign. You walk through the snow and open the door wondering what you will find. As you enter you pull back a heavy curtain and you won’t believe it. It’s an intimate small bar with a terrific atmosphere and a brilliant vibe. I believe the owner has had it for many years and it’s so authentic. Trust me you won’t know why you love it you just will, particularly if you like heavy rock music. Please never change anything it’s so brilliant.

Hidden gem in the old part of Zermatt. Authentic and cosy pub, full of great atmosphere. The place you want to find in a climbing and outdoor mecca, that Zermatt originally was, before mass tourism took over the main street and the vibe of this town. At Z’alt Hischi you can still find real Zermatt, we all want to find. The place is tacked away just minutes from the main drag but it’s a sanctuary, a world away from commercial despair of Bahnhofstrasse. This is the place where I imagine the climbing routes were planned by the mountaineers, who pioneered these alpine giants.
