This was one of the most fascinating things I saw in Istanbul. The architecture, the size, the mechanics of it all... And to think it was originally built over 1,500 years ago! We spent more time in here than some of the mosques and museums we visited. It's also gorgeous.

Definitely a must see place in Istanbul! Beautiful architecture and  colors show. The entrance ticket is quite pricey for such small sight, but still worth visiting. Nice place for great photos!

I stayed very close by, went at night, last hour open, was very quiet (less than 10 people in there) Beautiful very nice for photos. Note: this is across the street from Sofia Hagia mosque. The area is a zoo even in
middle of winter and rain. Best to do all of these things in off times and days.

Tickets per person were about $28 and we purchased one audio guide for another ~ $5.
Be sure to download the audio guide on your cell phone before you start descending the steps into the cistern, since there is not much network range underground.
We arrived on a weekday at 10 AM , and there was a short but fast queue ahead of us - about 7 to 8 people ahead of us.
The audio guide shows a map of the basilica cistern open tourists with different spots marked on the map, each corresponding to an audio clip. Since we visited earlier in the day, it was not terribly crowded, and we were able to find spots along the walkways where we could wait and listen to the audio clips for information.
We absolutely enjoyed our visit and it is definitely worth the ticket price .
This is pretty well-maintained, and it’s quite incredible to walk through a structure that’s almost 1500 years old (made by the Romans in 532CE). Absolutely marvelous to think of humans hundreds of years ago, managing to set up these stone pillars and creating this cistern & water storage system. Imagine discovering this amazing space with a boat and candle light in the year 1532! You really have to be a true adventurer.
In present times the cistern houses multiple art exhibits place in gaps along the columns throughout. There are also some evening cultural shows that happen.
The space is very well lit and has color changing lights .
It’s definitely a little damp inside, but still feels cool  - it might be different when you visit extremely crowded times.  There are also spots along the walkway where water drops may drip on you, so keep that in mind if you’re carrying a camera.
