More deserving of 3.5 than 3. Stayed for one night and found the room clean and comfortable if slightly noisy but that’s expected for a pub. Arrival was confusing as we went to reception where the person seemed surprised that we had walked in and wasn’t the most helpful. Other members of staff were friendly.

What let this place down was the food. Bar and drinks were good. Unfortunately the vegetarian options just aren’t worth offering people. The pasta verged on inedible - swimming in oil, tasteless and with some jarred tomatoes randomly scattered on top. The side vegetables tasted of nothing and were extremely watery. It was slightly my own fault but I should have requested to be moved away from the fire which gives a front row seat to steaks being cooked which wasn’t for me.

Breakfast has similarly limited veggie options. I understand that this is not a vegetarian restaurant (all the bar snacks are meaty) but I came knowing they offered veggie options however they are very sub standard. My partner enjoyed the meat pie and the mash was very good.

Despite the well appointed rooms and interesting artworks we won’t rush to return due to the food options and lack of walks from the pub itself.

Absolutely excellent. We stayed with two young boys for two nights. The room was ideal as after their bedtime we could shut their door and stay up.

Food in the Elk room was a real treat and the bar was great. For the most part we took drinks back to the room as the bar was kids free.

Service was sublime, especially the guy at dinner service - who was brilliant.

Everyone was very helpful. The only thing that could have made it even better was if breakfast service was as good as dinner service.

I love that you don’t get hounded for reviews and feedback after your stay just a simple thank you email and here’s where you rebook. That’s nice.

As ever, it was busy!  At the time, there was a shortage of available  seating, but many vacant reserved seats.  We were not permitted to use these because the staff had prepped the tables.....they were empty when we arrived, and when we left: their use by us was non-negotiable; our comfort and wellbeing at that time was not a consideration, the staff's focus being on preserving the preparations for the parties that were scheduled to arrive sometime in the future.

We live locally and visit here a bit. We cant get into this place during the peak periods , but now the bloody tourists have gone , we were able to get a table a few days ago.

I've reviewed the Gunton Arms before  in glowing terms. This really is the best restaurant for food and service for miles around.

Food continues to be excellent and my daughter had the best (local) lobster she has ever had. The small meagre amount she let me taste was truly brilliant and not over cooked as commonly happens with lobster in other restaurants.

My sons partner said his steak was in the top 3 of steaks he had ever had.

Staff continue to be excellent.  Prices are high, but for this quality its worth it

Two suggestions
1)Wish they did some kind of local priority system as its us locals who use the restaurant in January and February when the tourists are away. just a thought.
2) Can you change the veggie menu a bit. Its been the same for ages and need an update

Vibe, food, wine, service, location, lighting, decor, ambience…. 11/10 absolutely impeccable. If you want a weekend away to switch off from it all book this immediately and never regret it. Lunch the next day at The Suffield after a circular walk a must.
