I enjoyed a lovely date night to celebrate. Sitting at the bar, excellent was service. The cocktails were on the pricey side, but they complemented the meal well. We opted for the omakase menu, which was fairly decent overall. The wagyu beef tartare was delicious, with the accompanying cracker providing a great textural contrast. The charcoal udon was the highlight, the noodles were perfectly chewy, and the seafood sauce clung to them beautifully.

However, the main course of beef was a bit disappointing, as it arrived lukewarm. While the waitress kindly offered to take it back, I declined since it was getting late. Having two beef courses on the tasting menu also made the second dish feel less special.

Fortunately, the dessert at the end was delicious and helped to redeem the meal, leaving us with a sweet final impression.

Wow! I’m usually weary of fusion (because sometimes the dishes feel forced and unnatural), but Kissa Tanto blew me away and made me a fan! All of the food was very well thought out and combined a good amount of Italian and Japanese elements. Some particular highlights were the pastas / noodle dishes, specifically the charcoal udon and the spaghettoni.
Service was also impeccable. Our server patiently explained every dish, answered any questions and made sure our drinks were always topped up.

If you follow my reviews, you’ll know that I can be a bit picky—especially when it comes to what I’m paying for. Celebrating a special occasion at a Michelin-starred restaurant naturally comes with high expectations, and this one-star Japanese establishment had us intrigued. Listed as Japanese cuisine on the Michelin website, the moment we arrived, we were struck by the décor—straight out of a Hollywood movie set and it turned out out to be an Italian x Japan fusion restaurant.

Service

The service lived up to Michelin standards. From hanging our coats to wiping the table between dishes and thoughtfully explaining every plate, the staff ensured a polished dining experience. Our server, in particular, was attentive and professional, answering all our questions with ease.

The $200 Omakase Experience

The six-course omakase began with a choice of water. My wife selected still water, while I opted for sparkling—but unfortunately, it wasn’t sparkling at all, a small but disappointing start.

Appetizer: Oysters and Octopus Salad

The fresh oysters, served with a wasabi dip and a kimchi sauce, fell short of expectations. The wasabi dip lacked flavor, though the kimchi sauce was a saving grace. On the other hand, the octopus salad was superb—the pepper sauce paired beautifully with the radish, making it one of the highlights of the meal.

Second Dish: A5 Wagyu Beef

While we appreciated the quality of the A5 wagyu, it was simply too fatty for our taste. We understand that wagyu is prized for its marbling, but this particular preparation didn’t resonate with us.

Third Dish: Uni Omelette

The uni omelette was fresh, likely flown in from Japan, and enjoyable. However, serving an omelette as part of a $200 menu felt underwhelming. While the flavors were good, the dish didn’t match the level of luxury we anticipated.

Fourth Dish: Seafood Ravioli

The ravioli had a nice texture, and we were told the filling included lobster, scallops, and cheese. However, the flavor was a letdown—there was no distinct taste of the promised ingredients, only a general creamy note.

Main Course: Ossobuco

The ossobuco was the star of the evening. The beef shank was fall-apart tender, the sauce was rich and flavorful, and the marrow was divine. This dish truly showcased the skill of the kitchen.

Dessert

The dessert was another highlight—perfectly balanced between sweet and sour, it wrapped up the meal on a high note.

Final Thoughts
The evening ended with a classic Italian coffee (not included in the omakase), which was a pleasant touch. While the service and atmosphere were impeccable, the food was a mixed bag. A few dishes shone brightly, but others felt uninspired.  That said, we might return to try their fried fish—we noticed other diners enjoying it, and it looked quite tempting.

First dine out in 2025! What a pleasant surprise found in the middle of Vancouver China town, 2nd floor of some building.

Kissa Tanto offers a la carte as well as omakase. Their omakase menu is customizable according to your preference and would also be charged at different price point. We had to ask the staff to detail out what a standard omakase looks like in order to decide what we want. At the end, we chose a la carte.

Service and vibe are both superb. We were seated at the bar counter, the staffs are very detailed when it comes to cleaning our counter and preparing the right cutlery before every dish is served.

Food is amazing and has a fair balance of Japanese and western cooking. Dishes that were especially memorable to us were the stuffed olives and bolognese spaghetti.

In terms of drinks, they look like they make very good cocktails and have great sake selection. As we are not up for alcohol that night, we chose a sparkling hojicha which I highly recommend, the smell and taste is very unique and beautiful.  I wish other restaurants out there would also put in the efforts to make unique non-alcoholic drinks.

Definitely will visit again when we are next in town.

Three words: Best I’ve had.
Best service, best vibe and atmosphere, best food and best drinks I’ve ever had. Truly Kissa Tanto is a complete gem. We went for an anniversary and want to make it a tradition every year to return as it was that special. Best dish of the night goes to the seafood udon noodles, a must try. Every bite was incredible, each appy and each drink suggested by our server based on our taste. Eat here!!
