August 2023: I booked a Lufthansa flight to Lagos, Nigeria with excitement, looking forward to a going back home for the first time in 2+ years, attend a very important family ceremony and see my son(again for the first time in 2+ years). 22 October 2023: Day of the flight, Lufthansa (to a lesser extent, Air Canada, the flight operator) informed me at the counter, while trying to check in that because the flight had 2 stopovers, Munich and Frankfurt, I would need a transit visa for one of the stops. I know a few things about website user interface/user experience (UI/UX), this could have been displayed to me at the point of sale for the ticket, like most other airline sites would display banners and/or notifications. Nonetheless I take accountability for not adequately researching the requirements. I missed the flight. Time wasted, really annoyed. 23 October 2023: Got on the phone with "customer service" (I use the term loosely) requested that my ticket be opened and that I be rebooked for the flight to Lagos on 16/01/2024. Simple enough request, this was done. No customer satisfaction awards necessary here. 15 January 2024: Online check-in opened. Tried to check in but I cannot check in online. Apparently, this is a thing with Lufthansa. Site chat-bot is useless. Customer Service is polite but unhelpful, I was informed that their website had issues (weird for a major airline but hey...) and also, I could not be checked in over the phone and that I should proceed to the airport to check in. 16 January 2024: Day of the flight, which I had rebooked 2+ months ago(October 23), I wake up to an email from Lufthansa (yes folks, on the morning of the flight) My flight from Toronto to Frankfurt was fine but my flight from Frankfurt to Lagos was cancelled and they would revert when they could book me on another flight for that leg of the trip. Remember that chat-bot? Yes, useless. So I jumped on the phone and proceeded to listen to elevator music for about an hour, I was able to speak to no one. The award for customer satisfaction goes to...not you Lufthansa, as Kendrick Lamar would say, sit down, be humble! Since I was not getting my issue resolved on any of their available channels, I decided to head to the airport a whopping 5 hours before my scheduled flight. Now the airport is about a 30 minute ride from mine. 5 minutes out from the airport, I check my emails and I get 2 emails from Lufthansa; 1.The 1st leg of the flight, Toronto to Frankfurt, that I was previously scheduled to fly out on at 18:15 was now unilaterally moved from 16/01/2024 to 17/01/2024! Oh it gets better, it was now Toronto to Cairo and no longer Toronto to Frankfurt! 2.The 2nd leg of the flight that they promised to revert on was now Cairo to Lagos on 18/01/2024. The impact of these changes on my travel plans is significant because I now have to rebook my domestic flights and hotel stays within Nigeria. I took it on the chin once again and decided I would come back early to check in on the 17th, as the flight was scheduled to depart at 12:45. 17 January 2024: I walked past my luggage strewn living room to my work station to check if I had received a link for online check-in. Nothing. I entered my booking reference for the new trip via Cairo that I had been volunteered for. Nothing! I confirmed that flight hours earlier! So I get on the phone to speak to... you guessed it, customer service. 30 odd minutes later, The polite guy asked me to please call back in 15 minutes. I call back 30 minutes later hoping that everything had been resolved by my reliable and very organised friends at Lufthansa so I could head to the airport as planned and catch my flight. If you believe that then I have an airport in Milton, Ontario that I'd like to sell you! The subsequent and very ineffectual attempt to yet again reorganise my travel itinerary is as follows; 1.I could not travel on the Cairo flight because there was a change in the class of the flight from economy class ticket I booked on the Lufthansa flight to an unspecified class on Egypt Air. To this I asked, how is this my problem, I didn't rebook the flight, you guys offloaded onto this flight! Option #1 is useless. 2.She then suggested that she was going to book me on the next available flight, still on the 17th but on a flight operated by Air Canada(remember them?) Toronto - Lisbon - Frankfurt - Lagos. Great! All I need to do now is hand draw a Schengen visa so I can transit through Portugal. Where on earth can I get a transit visa on such short notice? What magic trick did she expect me to perform? I am Nigerian passport holder! (only my African brothers and sister would understand) Option #2 is useless. 3.Now to my favourite solution. She could book me on an available flight on 18/01/2024, Lufthansa featuring Lufthansa and all I had to do was pay an additional CAD$4,303. What??? Are you kidding me I asked. I actually asked her to state the amount in numbers because I had to confirm that I was
