Today was the Civic Holiday. After having lunch with a Japanese-style house salad and shrimp tempura at a sushi restaurant in Kensington Market, I was on my way home and sat on a campus bench to organize some photos. Then, I set off for another walk, drawn by a faint carillon melody coming from somewhere. Following the sound to its source, I arrived at the Soldiers' Tower, a memorial to the fallen alumni of the University of Toronto.
Unexpectedly, a carillon concert was taking place, and it happened to be playing a tune I recognized. Hearing the theme of "Chariots of Fire" played by the carillon's clear and resonant bells was both beautiful and poignantly sorrowful. The Soldiers' Tower housed a carillon with 51 bells, making the sound even more special.
After the performance ended, I learned that the interior of the Soldiers' Tower would be open to the public, so I hurriedly climbed the stairs to the memorial room located about three to four floors up. Since I pass by the Soldiers' Tower at the entrance of the campus almost every day after work while taking my walk, I had thought there must be something meaningful in the space with the stained glass. Voila!!

It was wonderful to visit on Labour Day to hear the Carillon Recital and then visit the Memorial Room on the 2nd floor.

The set up of the concert was fascinating. A TV set showing a live stream of the musician playing the Carillon was rolled out outside so that concert goers could see her hands (and feet) working.

What a wonderful performance!

Afterwards we climbed 2 flights of stairs to visit the Memorial Room. Be sure to find the painting of Major Frederick Banting, yet the co-discoverer of insulin.

All of the artefacts in glass cases were donated. The exhibit was fascinating and poignant.

The Soldiers' Tower is the University of Toronto's war memorial. A few months after the Armistice ended the First World War on 11 November 1918, the University of the alumni, students, faculty and staff who had served and died in the war. The names of the 628 men and women who died while in service are engraved on the Memorial Screen in the west arcade. In 1949, the names of the 557 university men and women who died in service in the Second World War were engraved on the two walls of the archway.

The cornerstone of the Tower was laid on 11 November 1919, the same day that Hart House was officially opened. The Tower was dedicated at commencement in June 1924 and the clock and carillon were added in 1927. Its location between Hart House and University College was chosen to symbolize the union of the new with the old.

The 143-foot Tower is second only to the Peace Tower in Ottawa as Canada's tallest war memorial. In the top section are hung the 51 bells of the carillon. The Memorial Room inside the Tower immediately above the archway houses artifacts illustrating the contributions of the university community to the defence of Canada's freedom.

Beautiful historical landmark on the campus of the University of Toronto. The surroundings are beautifully landscaped, the tower is accessible from all sides, in the evening the monument is illuminated. You will find information boards in the area. It is definitely a good idea to come here when exploring Toronto.

Great historic monument and always nice to see it or photograph at the right time of day when the sun is beaming down on it. The Soldiers Tower is a bell and clock tower at the University of Toronto that commemorates members of the university who served in the World Wars. Designed by architects Henry Sproatt and Ernest Ross Rolph, the Gothic Revival tower stands at 143 feet tall and houses a carillon of 51 bells.
