Given the price point of this hotel, we were underwhelmed from the start. We’ve stayed at many beautiful hotels around the world and I can say, with confidence, this is not a luxury hotel or experience as the marketing online suggests and is not priced correctly.

First off, there’s a long, bumpy dirt road leading to the grounds, which makes it inconvenient to go to and from town. Seeing the beautiful photos and marketing online, you may think you never have to leave the hotel so this will not be an issue, but if you want to have any decent food while you are staying in Bacalar, you will need to leave the property often.

The rooms aren’t as well appointed as the photos suggest: they feel somewhat unfinished, and bugs easily make their way in. It is glamping at best.

The biggest let down for us was the food. The food was average bordering on not good, especially for the price point. We sent back a dish that was very undercooked. The service was also disappointing (trouble communicating, getting things wrong, forgetting items) and to make matters worse we both fell extremely ill after our first dinner and spent the entire night sick with food poisoning. (Also want to make it clear that this was not your average case of montezuma's revenge that you get in Mexico (which the staff tried to convince us of), this was full blown salmonella from the restaurant. I had to see a doctor twice and was very ill for over a week after eating here.)

The following day we naturally wanted to pay for our one night and leave, but were told that a refund would not be granted despite our experience. Of course this put a damper on our stay as we were sick the whole time and did not feel comfortable in our room or eating on the property.

On the positives, the laguna is beautiful, and staff on site were very kind and did do their best to try to rectify our experience. Long story short, please save your money, and stay somewhere else - we would not recommend this hotel.

Fantastic Hotel set beautifully in the jungle right next to the Bacalar lagoon. Extremely friendly staff, great bungalows, calm and quietness, beautiful property admits the trees. Open plan dining and bar, lounge deck at the lagoon and wildlife (spider-monkeys, toucans etc…) around. The hotel offers amazing breakfast with a good selection. The dinner menu will get exhausted after two nights. Also on offer are variety of activities such as trips to nearby maya sights, cenotes, sailing etc. we opted for a sunrise kayak tour with Cesar. He truly did a wonderful job at showing us the lagoon, explaining the ecosystem and taking us out for a beautiful sunrise. This place is a must if you have the time!! It is definitely worth visiting.

Spent 3 nights in this beautiful resort and could not recommend it more. The treehouses are beautiful and comfortable, the food is genuinely incredible, service and drinks were excellent and the surrounding jungle and nearby lagoon are absolutely beautiful. Especially liked the kayaks and yoga mats at the jetty to make the lagoon space feel even more special.

Would highly recommend the chefs multi-dish option on the menu. He is an incredibly talented chef and did a wonderful job. We especially appreciated the extra one off dishes at breakfast and dinner where he really showcased his talent.

Caesar and Gustav (and actually all the team) were especially helpful and attentive. We did a sailing trip on the lagoon which was so much fun and so well organised. Gustav also helped us spot local wildlife and during our stay at Boca de Agua we saw monkeys, foxes, coati, agouti, turtles and lots of beautiful birds and butterflies.

Would 100% recommend staying here!

Simply spectacular. The food is the best I’ve had in Mexico and worth the Michelin star, omakase dinner tasting out of this world. The service was nearly too good, the staff are so attentive. Mauro and Uziel we’re a great way to start the day with superb morning service. Couldn’t recommend higher!

Stunning place in the middle of the jungle. The design and architecture are simply beautiful and different in the area. Unfortunately the rain did not allow for enjoying everything and do all the activities.
The road to get there is terrible, 10 minutes of bouncing. Having known other properties around, I know it could be fixed (and should for their price). But oh well, if you don't go out you only have to endure it 2 times and that's what i'd recommend for a 2-3 night stay.
I give it 4 stars because of the prices/service. They seem off on some items and every waiter tells a different story. Also unlike anywhere in the country, they charge "plus tax" (of course in usd and plus tip which is debateably not a good practice, but we're used to that now). Of course we expected to be on the pricier side but that's when you can demand a very premium service. It wasn't. Some items even felt like a rip off at times. Cocktails were hit or miss (one was spectacular and two others passable whilst another was terrible). The food was great, although lunch options are scarce, and unevenly priced (2 mini quesabirrias $350 but 3 large shrimp tacos $280, plus tax). Everything is fresh and locally sourced, the open kitchen is a nice touch.
Overall it is gorgeous place with great photo spots but feels a bit overpriced in the end. We will be giving it a second chance in a few months when they are fully settled (they are quite new, only operating for a few months and first time at full capacity). Even so, we felt we paid for setting and design and not for service so much.
I would recommend going in low season as it felt crowded in the common areas, and it seemed to me that it'd be amazing.
