My wife and I had a lovely time there in Dec, right before the holidays.  The resort grounds are beautiful and quiet, with plenty of space.  Food was excellent (if a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for).  There was some construction noise next to our room away from the beach which we complained about and the staff upgraded us to a beach unit which was really nice of them to do. All the rooms were very private and secluded.   Impeccable service and attention.  Our concierges, Miguel and Guillermo, were fantastic - prompt, empathetic, personable and funny!  We would definitely go back again.

This was my first visit to a Banyan Tree hotel, and it will certainly be my last.

We were a big family of nine, and my wife and I arrived first to check in. Later, due to a flight delay, the remaining seven family members arrived at 10 PM. Just as they were about to enter the room, a male manager insisted that each of them sign individually and made them wait in the lobby.  We had already sent copies of our passports in advance, and I believe the signatures could have been collected later. Despite informing the male manager (who was either bald or had short hair) that all passport copies had been sent, he simply insisted that signatures were required, showing no flexibility. Moreover, he appeared displeased with our complaints. It was difficult to see such treatment as personalized service from a five-star hotel.

As I mentioned earlier, we are a family of nine, and during our 5-night, 6-day stay, my wife and I had to leave earlier after 3 nights and 4 days. Since the rest of our family doesn't speak Spanish or English, we went to the concierge next to Sands to settle the charges incurred so far and requested that our credit card remain available for any further expenses after our departure. The concierge assured us that they understood and responded positively.

However, while waiting for our taxi in the lobby, we were unexpectedly called to the concierge desk on the first floor and asked to check out again. This process made no sense to us. Despite having already explained our situation to the concierge next to Sands and being assured that there were no issues, we were still asked to check out once more. We had to explain our situation yet again, and they assured us that they understood and would ensure our family’s stay would not be affected.

At this point, I genuinely wonder if Banyan Tree truly offers personalized service to its guests. We had informed the hotel about our situation (that two out of nine family members would check in first and leave early) three times—once via email before check-in, again during check-in, and once more before check-out. Despite this, it seems the information was not shared properly. Who exactly were they communicating with? It’s clear that their internal communication system is seriously lacking, and their interdepartmental coordination and customer service are far from what one would expect from a luxury hotel.

Unfortunately, the issues didn’t end there. After we left, our family contacted us to inform us that their room keys were no longer working. We were extremely disappointed to hear this. What happened? Were we checked out entirely upon our departure? Or was the full 5-night, 6-day stay not properly registered? In all our experiences with five-star hotels, we have never encountered a situation where room keys stopped working in the middle of a stay.

But it didn’t stop there. When our family tried to charge their meals to the room, they were told that the card was not guaranteed, and they couldn’t proceed with the payment. Although the issue was eventually resolved after the staff rechecked the information, it was incredibly frustrating—especially considering that my wife and I had specifically emphasized this point twice before our departure. It felt as though our requests were completely ignored.

I have made up my mind that I will never stay at a Banyan Tree property again—not just in Cancun, but anywhere in the world. What should have been a relaxing family vacation turned into a series of frustrations, and at no point did we feel truly cared for. The staff displayed a procedural politeness, but it lacked the genuine warmth and attentiveness we have experienced at other luxury hotels such as Four Seasons, The Ritz-Carlton, and Mandarin Oriental.

By far the best hotel I’ve ever stayed at. The rooms are impeccable - we stayed in a pool villa off the beach. From the minute you walk in the staff is so kind and accommodating. You get a personal concierge to send requests to for whatever you need while on property. Food and drinks were delicious, recommend making reservations at least the day before you eat. The property is a beautiful jungle and each room is given bikes to ride around. Daily yoga classes at 8. Spa services were great. And it’s on property with el camaleon golf course which we loved playing twice. Thanks to Regina for making our stay so wonderful and we will most certainly be back!!!

My recent escape to the Banyan Tree Mayakoba with my spouse was blissful. From the moment we stepped into the lobby, I felt transported to a world of tranquility and luxury. The lush greenery, the calming sounds of nature, and the impeccable service created an atmosphere of pure relaxation.

Staying in the Beachfront Lani Pool Villa was a dream come true. Waking up to the sound of waves and stepping directly onto the pristine sand from my private patio was an experience I'll cherish forever. The villa was stunning, with its spacious layout, elegant decor, and incredible outdoor soaking tub – perfect for stargazing with a glass of wine. And let's not forget the private pool! It was heavenly to take a dip whenever I wanted, surrounded by beauty and privacy.

What truly elevated my stay, however, was the exceptional service. Every staff member was friendly, attentive, and genuinely dedicated to making my experience unforgettable.

Jorge and Osiel at Sands were absolute gems. They anticipated my needs before I even knew I had them, always with a smile and warm conversation. Hendricks, the beach attendant, was like my personal beach concierge! He seemed to magically appear whenever I needed a fresh towel, a refreshing drink, or even an umbrella to escape the midday sun. And then there were Abi and Jose at the concierge desk. They were incredible resources, helping me plan dinner and sharing their local knowledge to ensure I made the most of my time in Mayakoba. Thanks to them, I discovered hidden gems and had experiences I wouldn't have found alone. The team was also helpful in securing additional nights after we had our flight canceled due to a weather delay.

The dining experiences were just as memorable. Cello, with its romantic ambiance and exquisite Italian fare(try the mushroom risotto and short rib), was the perfect setting for an unforgettable evening. And Saffron? Wow. The authentic Thai cuisine, combined with the stunning lagoon views, made for a genuinely magical dinner.

Banyan Tree Mayakoba exceeded all my expectations. It's more than just a luxury resort; it's an oasis of tranquility where every detail is designed to create an unforgettable experience. This was our third visit, and we look forward to another trip next year.

Tips:  Avoid the lagoon view rooms.  Pool is on the 2nd floor and it's a pain to go back and forth to the bathroom make a drink etc.
Stop at the grocery in Puerto Morales and stock up on beer wine etc.  A beer cost over $10.  Avoid trying to have anything delivered to the resort as they wont be able to get in.  The restaurants are incredible especially Cello.  My wife and I had one of our best meals ever our last night.  We have now stayed in 3 different types of rooms and the Lanai Pool Suite is the way to go. Don't feel like you need to tip every single person.  Remember you are paying the outrageous service fee for golf cart rides etc.  We took great care of our Waiters.  The Waiters really appreciate it if you tip in cash at the restaurants.  Do the rainforest experience.  We have done this twice now and it's incredible.  The eco tour is a must so you can see the other resorts and restaurants.

My husband and I celebrated our recent nuptials at Banyan Tree Mayakoba. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and were pleased with our experience overall. We stayed on the beach and felt very comfortable at all times. The food was amazing at every restaurant. Though a little pricey, you never left a meal feeling unsatisfied.

We enjoyed the Spa (Rainforest experience), Latin BBQ Night, Wine Tasting and our Cooking Class with Chef Sandie of Cello. Special thank you to Chef Sandie and Adrien for the amazing time we had making fresh pasta, pesto and more! As a foodie myself I was truly enamored with the experience. 10/10 recommend!!

Though this was our first time visiting Mexico, it will not be our last. Thank you Banyan Tree Mayakoba for helping us celebrate being husband and wife. We are forever grateful for your hospitality and experiences. We can't wait to return one day like the sea turtles.
