One of 2 cafeterias at UCI, this 1 is my favorite. Good food selection and friendly service! Great layout makes for a smooth transition to the different food islands!

As a parent, I was a little worried about how my daughter was going to survive at UCI, once I read the previous reviews. However, I was pleasantly surprised by my visit to The Anteatery on move-in. Since there are only two main dining halls on campus, The Anteatery is pretty large, with several different food stations. I was shocked to see that they had infused water (cucumber and lemon) available, as well as non-dairy milks (almond, soy) in different flavors. They even had horchata! Food was a mixed bag. I tried the BBQ pork ribs (okay), but their mac and cheese was bland - it didn't even taste cheesy (I am convinced that they must have switched the pans with the vegan version, which was also available). Lacking a pasta, I got their rigatoni with meat and mushroom sauce, which was decent. They had fresh basil, grated parmesan and chili flakes on the side, which was a nice touch. I was initially excited about the desserts, but less so once I actually tried them. I did take advantage of their soft serve (though my attempt to get combo swirl was a complete fail and I heard they removed the lever after that, because it was broken). The Anteatery has a lot of vegan options (not that I ate any of them). Overall, it's way better than the dorm food I was subjected to when at was at school.

I think the food here is very hit or miss. It's fun when they do specials or themed meals. Although it's really spacious in here, it gets really full during dinner time in particular. Personally, I prefer Brandywine.

Food is decent, getting better. Still finding strays of random objects in the food on occasion. A friend found a piece of hair on his plate, after his burger/fries. I found a random piece of metal in my dessert. My gripe: Breakfast hours is posted for 7am today (Friday, 9/14/18) - so I make my way over around 7:15, and the door is locked. Breakfast menus are up. I knock and a worker just looks at me from halfway across the room, then looks away. How hard is it to update the website or the signage on your door with your actual operating hours? Wasted some of my morning dealing with this since I had to park at the structure and walk over. Ended up going to Chick Fil-A at UTC, which thankfully, observes the hours of operation that they post on their door/website. This is what happens when there is no oversight. Businesses open/close whenever they want, irregardless of what hours their patrons may find on their website/door.

I love The Anteatery! Sure, not every dish hits the nail on the head (vegan miso ramen, pizza), but that's to be expected from a facility that serves such a high volume of students. I typically gravitate towards the Mongolian Grill, vegan station and salad bar. The Anteatery is vegetarian/vegan-friendly and if you track down a manager or the chef, you can ask for items to be made without meat. I think they're also working towards having more gluten-free options for those who might be intolerant or sensitive. The space was just recently redone so it's clean, airy and open - an overall nice dining experience. They have garage doors that open to the outdoor seating which is very pleasant during warmer days. The staff is always really kind and I make sure to smile and say hi whenever I'm there. For those who don't have a meal plan (like myself), you an pay the door rate ($10/breakfast, $11/lunch, $13/dinner), which might seem a little steep, but considering it's cafeteria-style/all-you-can-eat, that's not bad.

There is food here, not all of it good, but there is freedom of choice so it isn't an issue if you know what to get. The pizza tastes like pizza (no surprise there) and the cheese and pepperoni varieties are always available. I wouldn't recommend it however, since the bakery section usually has a specialty version pizza or baked good that is pretty much always better. And if there is bread, you can't go wrong with getting a glass of milk to pair it with. Sometimes a specific milk machine is out, but never all three. AND WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T GET SKIM MILK. SKIM MILK IS JUST WATER PRETENDING TO BE MILK. Whole milk is always better, don't settle for less. The home section has a different option every day and 80% of the time it is delish. Sometimes there are vegetables I don't like (beans) or the meat is kinda tough, or there's something I would like to try once and never again, but it isn't often. The menu for the day is always visible on the signs so if you see something you don't like or aren't ready to try you can always ask the server to not put it on your plate. And if you see something you do like you can ask for extra. Or just come back for seconds and thirds and fourths. The salad and soup bar is what you'd expect. There are always a good variety of salad toppings available that vary every once in a while, and soups that rotate every day. The cheese and clam chowder soups are really good but usually run out by dinner. There is yogurt and stuff for breakfast but breakfast ends at 11 and I never wake up early enough to get a good look unless I've pulled an all nighter and eat it as dinner instead, which is a shame since the eggs and pancakes are pretty good. Finally there is the hamburger and fries place which is open lunch to dinner. The burgers are very nice. You can ask for a hotdog or a veggie patty burger as well, but nothing beats asking for two patties with cheese. If you don't have classes go for a triple. It's like in-and-out but with less of a wait time and only slightly less tasty burgers. I mean, I wouldn't really know since I don't really have much of a refined palate for burgers. I mean it's unlimited meat. There is a vegan option everyday but I wouldn't recommend it since it is usually a lot of oil and salt to make up for the lack of not vegan things. Sometimes people complain about the food. I don't know why. Some consider the meal plan to be pricey but it is no issue if you are good at eating a lot. And it is convenient as well.

I had an issue with one of the staff members (tall, South Asian, not a student here) who screamed at me, verbally harassed me, and kicked me out, taking my food and the utensils, as well as stealing my ID card. Yes, I claim harassment and the school isn't going to do anything about it. Most of the staff are generally nice though, like the student workers. Food can be good, but hit or miss.

They aren't kidding when they call this the Asseatery. I got bit by a spider here fall quarter. Then there was Hepatitis A in the strawberries here. Every other week there is a bug in the salad. Not to mention how cheap they are on here. And you're not allowed to ask for more. Not to mention the food was cold. Dinner is supposed to go on until 8PM, however some stations run out of food over an hour before 8PM so you're stuck eating pizza or waiting in extremely long lines for a burger that was made a few hours ago. You have to have a good eye to make sure the mosquitoes and bugs in the kitchen don't end up in your food. Sorry to those with bad eyesight.

When I first came here I was hoping for a 5 star, master chef, all you can eat, ready made, cooking master, master chef made meal. However Mr. Anteatery didn't deliver on this promise. As being a cafeteria for a prestigious Ivy League UC, I had high hopes that were soon crushed by my dining experience. There is plenty of room to sit and eat but the quality food is less than par. Varying meals everyday but soon they get a little old. Over all I give this a 3/5 stars because you know. Also enjoy this picture of my friend Tommy. He only like this place because of his anteatery crush. Operation golden eagle is still a go.
