We came to this original Tepeyac Cafe location in Boyle Heights on a nostalgic whim. I recall coming here when Manuel would walk up and down the line to the entrance and offer (tequila?) shots to patrons! I have family from East LA and we do like this location.

For a Sunday morning shortly after 9:00AM their inside eating area was packed with customers. We nabbed an outdoor seating spot with no wait. We got Manuel's special, which is a 5-pound burrito that serves up to 4 people. By default it is made with rice, beans, guacamole, lettuce, tomato, salsa, and pork. You can substitute other meats, and there is even a breakfast version if you want. There is no price listed on the menu, so I want you to know it costs $40. At $10 per person the portions are a decent value.

Service was quick, and the chips were crispy and fluffy and looked made there in-house. Manny's special burrito tastes as good as I remember. This wet burrito is big-time comfort food and real filling. Believe it or not, my family has only ever ordered burritos. I should come back and give the rest of their menu a shot!

#Legendary spot remains legit. 3rd generation keeping it real. Massive burritos show up at your table in two minutes. Delicious food, big value since 1955. Their $15 burrito will easily feed two, maybe three people!

I was looking for the best menudo in LA and this place was ranked #1 on Yelp. I got to say, it definitely delivered on the menudo!

I think they have their own parking lot too, I went on a sunday at 10 AM and waited about 45 minutes until we were seated. But once we were, they came by and took our orders, within 10 minutes our food was on our table.z

The menudo had all the good stuff: tripe, pata (pork feet), tendon, etc. The corn tortillas were so nice and chewy and you can tell it was homemade. They had crazy large portions, I would recommend a small size unless you are HUNGRY.

I grew up two blocks from El Tepeyac, been going there since the early eighties. It's changed a lot throughout the years, best years were when Manuel was around. I've moved away from CA a long time ago but every time I visit family that's the go to place. I recently visited and ate a Manual special with my daughter's. The taste of the burrito is gone, but I mean gone. The meat was not cooked properly had more fat than anything. The green chili was bland, rice, beans mediocre and the avocado was watery inside. I guess who ever took over the place didn't care about quality and the tradition Manuel left behind. I don't think I will ever eat a Manuel Special maybe a quesadilla, hopefully they can still make cheese and tortillas taste good.
