We help clear the shelters again, rescued an adorable, dashing little charmer we named Heremes . He is so sweet but after two weeks my other rescue Echo was making it very difficult to keep him so we were able to find him a great forever home with a vet tech at Marina Del Rey VCA Vet technician. We help clear the shelters often so we’ll be back soon for yet another potential furry family member . Staff here are excellent at West LA animal shelter.

I went in a month ago with five kittens about 8 weeks old and they didn't give me their ID numbers. I went back to provide them with blankets and the lady that took them in with a cage to the back  told me they were adopted but I don't know if it is true because they told me they did not  have them in the system.

DO NOT BRING STRAY ANIMALS HERE! on 9/13/24 I brought in two kittens that I found on the road near my house. At first, one staff member tried to help me and assured me the kittens would be treated for any medical problems and would then get adopted. Then, a very frantic and rude woman came out and said they were having a ringworm outbreak and that THE KITTENS WOULD BE EUTHANIZED UNLESS I TREATED THEM AT MY EXPENSE. She was very rude and pressured me to make the decision to take them back or have them euthanized in only a couple of minutes. THIS PLACE CLAIMS TO BE A “NO KILL” SHELTER but won’t even treat the simplest of medical issues!! The WORST part is I did demand the kittens back and took them to an actual vet and came to find out THEY NEVER HAD RINGWORM IN THE FIRST PLACE. THIS WOMAN WAS JUST LOOKING FOR AN EXCISE TO EUTHANIZE KITTENS AND SHOULD NOT BE WORKING ANYWHERE NEAR THIS ANIMAL SHELTER. I will be going back there to get this woman’s name so I can lodge an official compliant with whoever I need to. ITS DESPICABLE.

PLEASE adopt an animal from here just to get them out of here!! My husband and I visited to adopt a kitty, and once we found the cat room, we were so saddened to see the state of the facility. It was so dirty, and boxes and equipment and just *stuff* was piled up everywhere. There were only a few cats in cages (hopefully the rest were in foster care!), and we immediately found a sweet affectionate boy who was rubbing up on the door of the cage and putting his paw through the bars to try to get closer. I got eye level with the sweetie and put my hand up to the cage and one of the volunteers walked in and admonished me for getting close to the cat. I asked if we could take him out to get to know him and her response, word for word, was, “I don’t like to take them out. We don’t clean the socializing room and they could get sick if there was a sick cat in there.” Admitting they don’t clean and that she’s too lazy to clean?! I told her adopting a cat is a 20 year commitment so at the very least I’d like to pet a cat before making that decision. She said, “Cats are always scared at the shelter. Even if you meet him he’ll be different at home.”
Listen, I understand it’s a thankless “job” (she was a volunteer), but isn’t the goal to get these animals into good homes? I’ve only adopted animals from shelters and never have I been treated like an inconvenience for asking to spend a little time with a potential new pet. I fear this girl may have turned a lot of people away who would have been excellent pet parents.
I’m adding the second star only because an animal control officer in the front desk area helped a homeless woman with an injury and she was very compassionate.
West LA Shelter, PLEASE train your volunteers to prioritize treating potential pet owners better. And clean the place up!! The girl who spoke with us was walking around aimlessly; take pride in keeping the place clean for the animals!
