I had planned a birthday weekend in LA well before the fires started. My friend and I debated whether we should still go, but we're glad we did, both to help the local economy (which, as we found out, was really suffering) and because it was a dream to stay at this hotel. It really is as dreamy as I hoped. The staff was so great, rooms were very comfortable and large, and the rooftop pool is fabulous. The vibe was obviously a bit somber with all that was happening, but it was really great to know the hotel was offering discounted rates to those who were displaced from the fires. I would absolutely love to come back here someday when the circumstances are better, but it was as good a visit as it could be given the situation.

tldr: Our bill had bogus extra charges; the hotel was loud, in disrepair, and poorly managed to the detriment of guest experience.

Our stay at Petit Ermitage reminded us how badly a hotel can be run. On day 1, we dropped off our bags in the morning and the front desk promised to send them to our room when it was ready. At check-in time, we repeatedly asked if our bags were in our room and the guy at the desk just shrugged and said to call down if they weren't. Of course the bags were not in our room and the phone buttons for connections to all the hotel services including the front desk didn't work. The whole bag odyssey took 30 minutes to solve and my partner had to just go sit on our pool bed to hold our reservation in their street clothes while I sorted the whole mess out.

That night, we had cabaret reservations on the rooftop. Dolph Lundgren had rented half the roof for a private party for some liquor he was launching. The cabaret door person allowed 18 people from that party to cut in front of hotel guests with cabaret reservations. The 18 party people took all the actual seats and the host made hotel guests sit on the floor.

All these little things would have been overlooked if the hotel hadn't promised us a quiet room and then put us in a third floor room directly below the rooftop bar/restaurant area. Our room was filled with the sound of chairs scraping, high heels walking, and loud bass noise from 6 am-2am daily. It was so confusing to us because we overheard the front desk person saying they had plenty of rooms to someone on the phone on our second morning, so this room was definitely not the only place for them to put us.

Our impression after leaving is this is just a party hotel and that's not very clear from the website to people not from LA. The entire rooftop including the pool allows smoking. At one point, a man lit a cigar next us and we chose to end our pool visit early. On our final morning, a man slipped by the front desk and was knocking door to door on our floor looking for a man he had partied with the night before. It's very disturbing to have someone bang on your door over and over until you answer it, only to find they're just some person off the street.

The final insult to this whole disappointing experience came when we received our bill and found a number of charges for food and drink we didn't authorize on our room. After we discussed this with the front desk, they removed only some of the charges that were unauthorized but added a new $15 charge for a "stained towel that couldn't be cleaned". Given the number of towels that must be stained with food and wine daily during normal pool service, this charge struck us as a petty add-on. For the rest of the charges, they advised us to call for a manager during work hours M-F which we feel is much more friction than is reasonable. For charges to the room, they should easily be able to provide signed receipts but did not do so. Honestly, it feels to us that they will find a way to take more from you than the room fee by any means necessary.

The valet, the afternoon pool attendant, and the morning breakfast servers were all wonderful. Our impression is that the majority of issues stem from the front desk and management.

I’ve celebrated many birthdays at Petit Ermitage, and every time I return, it feels like stepping into a magician’s private lair—if that magician had excellent taste in cocktails and a passion for mood lighting. My most recent visit? Fantastic. The ambiance was as enchanting as ever, the service was lovely, and the food and drinks did not disappoint.

The Food: Choose Wisely
•	The Smash Burger – Okay, I’ll be honest: I wanted to love it more than I did. It wasn’t bad at all—definitely a solid choice if you’re in the mood for a classic, no-frills smash burger. The flavors were there, and it had that crispy-edge sear you want, but if you’re expecting something that reinvents the burger experience, this isn’t that. If you’re a burger purist, you’ll probably enjoy it, but personally?
•	The Chicken – This one takes the crown. Juicy, flavorful, and just a well-balanced dish all around. If you’re torn between the two, I’d nudge you toward the chicken.

The Cocktails: A+ in Liquid Alchemy

Petit Ermitage doesn’t just serve drinks—they serve potions of pure delight. The cocktails are creative, well-crafted, and dangerously drinkable. You know a place is doing it right when you’re already thinking about your next order before finishing your first.

The Vibe: A Secret Society for the Cool & Curious

The ambiance here is impeccable. It’s intimate, mysterious, and effortlessly stylish—like the kind of place where a magician might be staying between shows. The lighting is just right, the crowd is interesting, and it all feels like a hidden world that you want to be part of.

The Bathrooms: A Full-On Experience

I won’t spoil anything, but the bathrooms have personality. It’s the kind of place where you walk in, pause for a moment, and think, “Huh… well, that’s different.”

The Napkins: MVP of the Night

Now, let’s talk about a true highlight of the evening—the napkins. These aren’t your typical, flimsy, fall-apart napkins. These are THICK bois. Luxurious, substantial, and boldly printed with the word “Wet?” on them. Why? No one knows. But somehow, it just makes sense.

The Catch: You Gotta Be on the List

This isn’t your walk-in-and-grab-a-table kind of spot. You need to be on the list or invited, which adds to the exclusive, tucked-away charm.

Final Verdict:

Petit Ermitage is a fantastic spot for a special evening. The ambiance is magical, the cocktails are top-tier, and the food is solid. While the smash burger is good, the chicken is the real winner if you want a standout dish. Plus, the napkins alone deserve their own Michelin star.

Would I come back? In a heartbeat. Would I frame one of their napkins as modern art? Not ruling it out.
