Let me start by saying this: my experience at Bernardus Lodge & Spa was a mix of highs and a few areas for improvement, but overall, it was memorable.

I booked the “Body + Soul” package, which includes spa and dining credits alongside a one-night stay. From the very beginning, my experience with Tami was exceptional. She handled my booking over the phone with professionalism and even went the extra mile to answer my additional questions via email. Her attentiveness and thoughtfulness shone through, especially when she mentioned that she’d put in a strong request for a complimentary upgrade, understanding how rare it is for parents to get a getaway. That personal touch didn’t go unnoticed. Thank you, Tami!

Check-In Experience:

This part was, unfortunately, not as seamless as I had hoped. While the front desk employee was efficient, the interaction felt impersonal and lacked warmth. It felt purely transactional, which stood out even more when I noticed another couple being checked in by a different staff member. They received a much more welcoming experience, complete with friendly conversation and complimentary wine. It left me wishing for a bit more of that hospitality.

Although I didn’t get the upgrade Tami had requested for me (which I completely understand wasn’t guaranteed), I did eventually receive the glass of wine that was part of the check-in process, but only after some awkwardness. It felt like an afterthought rather than part of the experience.

Spa Experience:

The spa amenities are available throughout your stay, which is a fantastic perk. On the women’s side, the facilities were spotless, with everything cleaned and stocked regularly. The 100-degree pool in the shared area was a highlight, providing the perfect temperature for relaxation.

However, there’s room for improvement. The steam room had a slightly moldy smell, and neither the steam room nor sauna felt quite hot enough to be fully enjoyable. While I did see a keypad that might allow for temperature adjustments, I wasn’t sure if guests were allowed to use it since no instructions were provided. Clearer communication on this would have been helpful.

One thing to note: the spa automatically adds a 23% gratuity to your bill at checkout. While I understand gratuities are standard, I would’ve appreciated a heads-up about this policy beforehand.

Dining at Lucia Restaurant:

Lucia was a standout part of our stay. Kerry, our server, deserves high praise for his attentiveness and friendly demeanor. He ensured that we were well taken care of throughout the evening.

The food itself was a mix of hits and minor misses. The crab cake was the star of the meal—fresh, flavorful, and perfectly complemented by the pickled ingredients on top. My husband’s prime beef tenderloin was cooked exactly to his preference, but my short rib, unfortunately, arrived lukewarm, which slightly detracted from the dish.

A minor hiccup occurred when the dining credits from our package weren’t applied to our bill. I had to call afterward to get this corrected, but the staff resolved it promptly.

Overall, my experience at Bernardus Spa & Lodge had its ups and downs, but the thoughtful touches and standout employees like Tami and the housekeeping staff made it a worthwhile getaway. With a few adjustments to consistency in guest experience and clearer communication, it could easily go from good to extraordinary.

A magical place for a special occasion. Stayed just one night and definitely felt the sting of the high cost, but given the ability to use the pool and jacuzzi + spa areas even after checkout the day of departure (for which other places would charge extra), it felt like money well spent. At the end of the day, this place is worth every cent.

Checkout at 12; amazing, free healthy snacks everywhere. Gorgeous setting among the vines and mountains. Lavender and rose garden. Super duper comfy bed and pillows (I have a hard time sleeping in hotels).

Beautiful place. Only stayed for one night so can’t comment on the amenities/services. I do have a gripe with their claim to be “dog friendly” though. They charge $200 (PER DOG) for a pet fee. That’s criminal. That is not a hotel that is “dog friendly”; that is a hotel that simply allows dogs. I stayed at a resort that was double the cost of this place the night before and they charged $40 for a pet fee and included treats, dog toys, blankets and basket, etc. and were so friendly and sweet to my dog. There is absolutely no legitimate reason to charge $200 for a dog fee, I’ve stayed at likely over 100 places with my dog and have never, ever, been charged more than $100. And those places never charged per dog. Just insane.

Beautiful and peaceful property! We ate dinner one night at Lucia, which was lovely and watched the sun set each evening from the infinity jacuzzi. Our only complaint is that we booked nights under two reservations (using credit card points) and I called ahead to ensure we wouldn’t have to move rooms - was reassured they would connect the bookings and we’d have one room for the week. And then when we checked in we were told…we’d have to move rooms. Other than that, we really liked the resort and would definitely return!

I've been here five times, and this property never disappoints. Peaceful quiet and the spa services never disappoint. The food is great but if you want to go offside there is lots of places to eat.
