Free to visit. They are closed during the holidays. It is a self paced museum. It was quite interesting to see the actual work place and to see the cables running. It will not take you more than an hour to walk the entire thing. Would recommend for everyone who wants to understand the cable car history of San Francisco.

A working museum of one of San Francisco's premiere attractions which is recognized by the National Historic Register.
I say working museum because you can look down into the (off limits to the public) working area where you can see the big wheels that keep the underground cables that power the system moving, 24/7/365.
There are several vintage cable cars (and highly detailed models of cable cars) plus many other artifacts on display.
All that and admission is by donation...

The cable car museum is an excellent place to learn about the workings of the cable cars.

The museum is loud because the building houses the winding engines for all the cable car lines.

The video presentation is excellent despite its' age and the information signs are informative and tell the history of the cable cars in great detail.

The museum has bathrooms, and a gift shop too, although it feels very touristy aside from the local art.

It's worth a visit. You can get a good visit in around an hour.

Definitely worth going! And it's free! It was fun to see how cable cars work right in front of your eyes. Doesn't take long to see the whole museum but the display were very knowledgeable and educational. If you got 30 mins to spend on a simple tour. This is a great place to go. Btw. You can even buy a piece of cable to bring home.
