Based on the reviews, it's hard to determine if Old Mandarin is among the best or the worst restaurants in SF. So I decided to check it out for myself.

From the outside, it has a simple vibe and is very up-front about being a Halal restaurant (which I appreciate as a Muslim). Stepping inside, I can admire the variety of decorations and artwork that cover the walls. My party is quickly guided to a table and provided with menus. The waiter wasn't particularly chatty, but he was friendly, professional, & prompt, which is all I look for. He collected our orders and within a few minutes, the food was ready.

For entrees, I shared the Cumin Lamb Stir-Fry and the Eggplant in Spicy Garlic Sauce, both of which were recommended in . The lamb was flavorful and satisfying, while the subtle sweetness of the eggplant was beautifully complemented by the sauce. A simple side of white rice was all else that was needed to complete my meal.

I will now touch on price, which seems to be a contentious point in many reviews.

Firstly, a few have called out the "hidden" fees that materialized on the receipt, like the gratuity. However, the menu was pretty upfront about what they included.. (Now you may have an opinion on the existence of those fees, but that's probably outside the scope of a review..)

Secondly, I am stumped as to why the prices are considered higher than expected. I have never considered SF a "cheap" place to eat, and there are far worse offenders that should be called out before Old Mandarin. My guess is that this is more expensive than other Chinese "hole-in-the-wall" restaurants, but I cannot classify this as "merely" hole-in-the-wall due to the quality and the exclusive usage of Halal ingredients. I was pretty satisfied with the portions, and the per-person cost was ~$30, hardly the worst for an occasional dine-in meal.

One point I will agree with is that they should offer free water in a glass, instead of assuming "water" == $2 bottled water. I suppose Europeans would be used to this..

Overall, I was happy with my meal at Old Mandarin and look forward to future visits. Maybe I will have to revise my review but I hope not.

This is a proper no nonsense place for halal Chinese  food. Service is super swift and staff friendly. Prices are a bit on the higher side. So is the level of spice in the food so be careful and they even warn you accordingly. So when they mention too spicy , then believe it! Portions are large as well.

You will never know how amazing this restaurant if you not go inside. It’s a restaurant, the food here is so great, fresh and delicious. but it really more likes a Chinese traditional culture museum. The owner has so many old furnitures, everything has their own stories. I’m so attracted by the owner when he talked about the history and culture. And also, the owner took so many pics with very famous people.
If you like Chinese history and traditional Chinese tastes, try here. You will not disappoint.

This restaurant is our top choice of dining whenever we visit Bay Area. Food quality is very consistent. Very fresh and yummy authentic Chinese food. But lately they have increased the prices tremendously. It’s like they almost doubled the price of every item on their menu.

Det här är en bra varm pottplats för lamm. De har många olika olika lammdelar men inte för alla. Priserna är lite branta men värt ett försök om du vill ha en äkta varm kruka. Inte allt du kan äta.

Denna plats är liten och tar inga reservationer, så planera i enlighet med detta.
Det serverar många regionala kinesiska muslimska rätter och är utmärkt för Halal-köket.
Ingen fläsk, i stället smaskigt, smakligt lamm. Glöm inte heller den gröna bonen och tofuen. Så bra!
Den heta potten är också en regional specialitet, doppsåsen är unik och i motsats till alla andra hittar du i SF och sällsynt i allmänhet.
Denna plats är opretentiös och de förväntar sig samma sak från dig. Det är god mat från ett familjeföretag och en favorit hos invånarna.

Var medveten! Kontrollera din faktura noggrant efter! De unga barnen som arbetar här tenderar att lägga till tips till summan utan att berätta för dig! Särskilt den unga tjejen med glasögon är hon inte särskilt vänlig och blir irriterad när du ber henne att föra dig saker. Hon sitter bara vid bordet och spelar med sin telefon. Den andra unga manliga servitören är mycket trevligare och artig.

När räkningen kom, blev jag chockad över att se att 4 av oss för hetpott kostar 189 dollar och vi beställde inte ens så mycket. Efter att CC-kvittot kom, såg vi alla på räkningen noggrannare och fick reda på att hon lade till tipsen och inte ens korsade ut delbeloppet på kvittot. Vi frågade den manliga servitören sedan den unga tjejen var på baksidan av köket varför det finns ett tips tills även när det bara finns 4 av oss, sa han sedan vi använde det stora bordet, läggs spetsen automatiskt till. . .

Hur som helst, vill bara se till att alla är medvetna om detta. Ibland tittar vi inte noggrant på räkningen och för att vara ärlig händer det mycket på kinesiska restauranger. speciellt de med unga barn som arbetar.

Å andra sidan, även om den heta potten är ett måste prova här men priset har gått upp och upp genom åren och del av köttet är mindre och mindre. 4 plåtar av lamm kött kostar 55 dollar! det är löjligt! Jag tror inte att vi kommer tillbaka länge. Återigen, KONTROLLERA DITT BILL!

Såg den restaurang videoklippet handlar om den Mat Nätverk visa och har varit som vill ha att prova den mat. Inte besviken på alla. Bra ställe att bo på om du letar efter lamm. Det fanns så många olika preparat av lamm, men ingen fläsk. Det var inte så kryddiga som jag trodde att det skulle bli, the chef can tona ned lite extra krydda en parabolantenn beroende på dina önskemål. Jag hade det Från Hunan Lamm och min vän hade den gula Curry nötkött. Utmärkt.
Stället är mycket litet och det åste några bord. Vi var där på en onsdag kväll och hade ingen reservation.
