This heritage property is friendly, charming and comfortable. Built in 1913, it offers clean, well-furnished rooms and polished public spaces with a vintage personality. It's rated a 2* hotel but sure didn't feel like it. We found it welcoming and enjoyed our stay. Our room was well-furnished, with microwave, fridge with two free bottles of water, a Keurig coffee maker and a folding luggage stand. The mini-bar prices are guest-friendly: just one dollar for M&Ms, Pringles, energy bars, cookies, candy and canned soft drinks. We heard zero noise from busy Santa Clara Street in our 4th floor rear room, and none from other rooms either - not with two feet of concrete between floors, according to the friendly manager. The free-standing heater/air conditioner was a bit noisy, but not enough to bother us. The towels were not plush but definitely a step up from what you might expect in a 2* hotel. The hotel has off-street parking; it's free if you book on their website. The included continental breakfast offered a good variety of baked goods, pastry, cereal, fruit and yogurt. The three kinds of coffee - medium roast, decaf, and New Orleans style dark roast with chicory - The three kinds of coffee - medium roast, decaf, and New Orleans style dark roast with chicory - were on the weak side. For a full breakfast try the Whispers Cafe and Creperie, a block and a half south on Third Street. We did see a few homeless men in the area - it's between City Hall, the convention center and the SAP Center - but we weren't bothered and hotel entry requires your key card at all times. Bottom line - we were delighted with the Clariana; a comfortable room with everything we needed, good location and a charming property.

Our flight was cancelled and we were stuck . I called and Tina gave us the last room and welcomed us warmly. We are grateful for our night in this historic hotel.

I don't get why this hotel got 3 stars on yelp (as the time of reviewing) because the quality if service they provide is really good and the owner was really caring of guests. They really deserve 5 stars in my opinion. I arrived very tired and got checked in pretty late but the lobby was open and the door was opened for me without having to call them. The room was very clean, perfect for covid time. They have all the amenities (toilet stuff are very good). And even free water bottles and free coffee in the room. With the price, they provide free breakfast. It's not the most luxurious 5 star hotel breakfast but not just cold cereal! They have yogurt, egg, sausages, many options for bakery. Very nice!! So, in short, it's a great hotel, great location in downtown San Jose. 2 mins walk to VTA station. Very quiet neighborhood. Totally recommend!

I've had the pleasure of staying at this hotel. They have excellent customer service and feel like they actually care about any issues or advice on the area. Yes there are homeless people and people on drugs, this is downtown San Jose. What do you expect? It is best not to walk by yourself at night in MOST PLACES in the BAY AREA. For the price and easy access to so many downtown hot spots, you can't beat it. It is not a full luxury hotel, but it is clean, safe, and the best price you will get in the area. Amenities: Complimentary breakfast, gym, lounge/study/eating area. beds were comfortable and rooms were spacious. No frills: just your classic hotel-room stay The manager/owner is such a sweet lady that does her best to take care of any of your needs. Pro-tip: Try booking with the hotel directly for the best rates and free parking.

Do not stay here. Service is horrendous to begin with. Not sure if that's just how the front desk person is or because she was literally the only employee I saw all day, all night, and all morning the following day. The lady couldn't find my reservation under my name despite me telling her I could give her my registration number. She wouldn't accept the fact that I had booked through a third party app and because she didn't know it she kept telling me that she didn't think the app even existed. I finally got her to look it up through the reservation number and told me that she did have my room but it was going to be an extra $25 for my additional guest. I was shocked but I didn't want to argue anymore so I agreed. The room was dirty: peanuts under the bed, dusty countertops, the shower curtain smelled like it hadn't been washed in a while. I asked for more towels and toiletries and all I was give was an extra towel that had been sitting inside a filing cabinet for who knows how long based on the smell. I didn't get any extra toiletries, which were needed, but kind of glad I didn't get as they felt and smelled cheap and low quality. Walls are paper thin so you'll hear everything that's happening around you. Everything. What flabbergasted me the most was the fact that the window to our 4th story room opened all the way. There was no screen, no railing, nothing to make sure you wouldn't fall straight through it if you were clumsy or just happened to be next to the window which in this case the bed was right up to it. According to the California Code of regulations, title 8 "(5) Guards shall be placed over windows which are not of the shatter-proof or wired glass type. (Title 24, Part 2, Section 2-3303(b)(2)(D).)". Though because of the style of window, I'm not sure if this applies. Do not make the mistake of staying here. Pay up a little more and stay somewhere else even if it's a bit more expensive. The one star goes to the gentlemen in the parking lot who was very nice and walked us to the door of the hotel even offering to carry our bags.

The only reason this is not a one star rating is that the staff is very friendly. I got to the hotel and was checked in. No problem, went to my room. The room was serviced, so I dropped off my bags and went to town. Later that night I came back and go ready for bed. Then the trouble started. The sink in the bathroom had caked on soap stains, there was a drop of blood on the floor of the bathroom by the toilet. When I tuned on the shower faucet, in the valley with chronic water shortages, I noticed it took a long time to heat up. In fact, the next morning I measured 2 and 1.2 minutes to warm up if one turned on the bathroom sink faucet as well. The shower floor is incredibly slick and I nearly slipped several times. The door was the typical auto-close hotel door with the added "advantage" of not quite closing enough to latch. This means that if the guest does not physically pull the door shut, it only looks latched. I have made and posted videos and pictures for all of this. When I came back on the second day there, and it was time for bed, I pulled down the comforter. I was taken aback to see that their method of Making a bed is simply to pull the comforter up over the rest of the bed without touching the sheets. Again I have posted a video. Their literature said "Newest Boutique Hotel" but this is hardly of that caliber. The price was excessive for service of this level. I expected much better.

Disappointing. Other reviews have mentioned problems with the A/C. In our room the vent was installed so that it blew directly on to one side of the bed. Pulling blankets over my head it was fine. The big problem was that it was very noisy. If I got to sleep the A/C would wake me when it came on. Eventually I turned the A/C down to 70 and turned it off when it got there. That way we could get to sleep and stay asleep. Other than that it was OK. Well the "breakfast" was so vile that they would be better off not even pretending to offer breakfast. Two positives. The staff were terrific, very accommodating. The prices on the snacks and drinks in the room were unusually low: most were a dollar. Still, I would not want to stay here again.

The employees are very nice and for the most part my review doesn't reflect them. My review is on the area. As a single female traveling for work, I felt extremely unsafe. The second you walk out the hotel there are people loitering and begging for money. I witnessed 2 fist fights and people screaming at one another. The door to the hotel is locked after a certain hour but I'm not sure when. I was waiting for the elevator and a guy was watching me from the outside and tried to jump in the elevator with me. Scary. I also had trouble falling asleep with the screaming and loud music outside at all hours of the night. The Subway restaurant across the street is shut down but the Starbucks was very convenient. I also enjoyed Hom Korean for dinner. The hotel is basic, no frills. I did like the daily 2 free bottled water and Starbucks coffee pods. The gym is basic.. 2 treadmills, a bike, and free weights. But the gym was clean. Actually the entire place was very clean and it's obvious the staff works hard. Overall, if you are a female traveling alone .. you might want to go elsewhere for safety reasons.
