Loved the vibe at 196 Club! It's super cool speakeasy aesthetic tucked away in downtown Hartford in an ice cream shop. The drinks were decent, but the food really stole the show. Everything we ordered was flavorful and well-prepared. Great spot for a lowkey night out if you're more into bites than cocktails. Would come back for the food alone. Great service as well!

The 196 Club is definitely a "speakeasy" location you should try! I went for a pre wedding celebration and we reserved half of the location. The bartenders were super friendly and made sure to keep up with the demands of our venue. The food and drinks were top-notch. We were served some finger food, and the meat balls were to die for. The drinks had interesting twists to classic drinks and left me wanting more. If you like mystery and enter a secret hidden bar for the elite just like in the movies, this location will make you feel like that with its setup.

My friend and I visited 196 Club after the first night of the Hartford Jazz Festival, excited to check it out. The aesthetic is cool and definitely gives speakeasy vibes. However, the experience left a lot to be desired. There was no clear seating process-- the host greeted us but didn't explain how seating worked. We eventually found a table ourselves, only to be told by a very aloof server that there was a wait, though he never took our names. Ordering was a bit chaotic and disorganized. I did enjoy the Figure 8 cocktail, but the service overall was underwhelming. The male server was distant and borderline standoffish, which really threw off the vibe. We ended up skipping a second round because the service was confusing and unwelcoming. I probably wouldn't return or recommend it--unless it's on a weekday and that particular server isn't working.

The drinks were alright, but the whole place is pretentiously priced and full of itself. menu was completely different from what was online, server(s) were decent untill tip was written, and the atmosphere was dive. told our server thanks for the service and he said verbatim "what am i in the f**king military" and walked away with his 20% tip. if you're looking for a good drink stop by but dont trust the website and dont trust the staff to do anything but turn tricks. also flies galore, video to prove it. had to leave what was left of our cheese plate to the gnats.

The entrance is great because it's a functional sweets shop so have to love that! But upon entering the speakeasy itself I was a little disappointed. It's a large space with plenty seating but vacant feeling at the same time. I wanted something more warm feeling I guess? There is different types of seating. Lots of couches and comfy chairs then some small tables with hard chairs. The latter is where we were sat and the chairs for the tables are the ones that dig into your butt (if you have a decent one) and I was uncomfortable immediately. Our waitress was very nice and accommodating. They were out the cheesecake we ordered so we did not get to try any food. It's mostly charcuterie type snacks and things my husband wouldn't eat besides dessert. We had one drink each- we both enjoyed them enough but honestly weren't feeling it and decided to leave after that one. We recently went to the speakeasy in wallingford and spent hours there so it's not that we just don't like the type of place. Maybe if we had one of the couches and I came with girlfriends who would've been down for the charcuterie items would've tried more.

Cool little speakeasy. Joe, my bartender, gave me some good advice on the seasonal drink, wisely advising me on the use of the maple cotton candy. (Did I actually just type that?) Anyway, Joe was cool. I let him choose drink 2, and he produced an excellent boulevardier. Snacks were respectable. All in all, I had a good experience and would go back!

Went here late in the evening while the DJ was playing- The DJing was good, though I felt like this place was a lot of different vibes meshed together. There seemed like there should be a dance floor but there wasn't, yet the music was too loud to really talk at any of the seats. It was sortve boujee yet still with club type musics. It is not a very large place. Cocktails were pretty expensive at $15. Food is more snack style. Parking is free after 8pm at meters but still pretty full/ we had to find lot parking. Staff was overall very friendly. Overall probably not my favorite place but may be someone else's vibe.

Wasn't ready for bed quite yet so decided to venture to get a night cap and whew, the 196 Club was worth it. What a neat little speakeasy in downtown Hartford. A lot bigger than I thought once you get into the bar area. Great bartenders who can also make you a drink just for funzies. I had a play on their margarita and then the bartender made another tequila based cocktail for me. I journaled. Enjoyed my beverages. Then called it a night. In all, so great!

This was my first time coming here. We came here without a reservation for 9 people. The host was able to find us a table quickly! I was extremely impressed. They have a fantastic cocktail menu and a snacks menu. I ordered the espresso martini affogato and OMG it was amazing! I would come back for this again. Weirdly, I also ordered the French onion dip because I had a weird craving and this was honestly the best onion dip I have EVER had. I ate it too quickly so I was unable to take a picture. The place is dark on the inside, but very pretty. 10/10 would recommend.
