I'll preface this by saying that I'm not leaving this review in the hopes of getting anything in return, I just simply think that this property could really use this feedback, if they choose.

The Balfour is a lovely old hotel, like many in the area. Since it's old, you can expect smaller rooms with old charming fixtures and creaky floorboards. That's part of the experience and certainly not why I'm leaving a "negative" review.

Our experience was made bad by the lack of customer service surrounding two key instances.

1. The second day we were at the hotel, there was a notable sewer smell as we passed the second floor and upon arriving onto the third floor. It was so strong in the hallways that I suspected that there was a backup somewhere, which I mentioned to another guest who said she could hardly stand to be around it and had to step outside or she would be sick. I went down to the reception desk and asked the front desk clerk why the strong sewer smell had suddenly appeared. She simply replied, "I don't smell it!" and dismissed me. I sat in the lobby for a bit and noticed that she did go over to the hallway and then called over some staff and had a whispered conversation with them. A simple response of, "Let me look into that for you!" or "I'm sorry you're experiencing that, let me see what I can do." would have gone SO much further than pretending the problem didn't exist.

2. The first day we arrived, there was water out in the lobby with cups provided. This was very welcome after a long journey. That night, though, when we arrived home - there were no cups available. Knowing that we didn't have any water in our rooms (unless we wanted to spend $8 on the warm bottles in the room for us to purchase), we asked the woman behind the front desk if she could replenish the water cups. She said that there would be no more water provided for the night, as they were out of cups. The next day, the water was removed entirely. It remained gone for the entirety of our 3 day stay. Since the restaurant/bar was under construction and closed (though we were told it would be hen on the second day of our stay, which it was not), there was no other way for us to get a cup of water. The bathroom sinks were so old and I couldn't fit my water bottle under the spigot. We asked the front desk multiple times if we could have a cup of water, and were denied. Water is such a small thing that can drastically improve the quality of a guests' stay, but so does friendliness and accommodation from the front desk staff. We paid nearly $50/day in a resort fee, surely that could have covered a couple bottles of water to make up for their construction project.

I'd recommend staying elsewhere in this area. The other hotels are all equally charming and in a tremendous location, but I'm sure their staff are trained better and will hopefully improve the quality of your stay as a result.

Absolutely loved my stay and wish I booked for longer.  The staff were lovely.  The hotel is charming and classically designed.  I love that the stairwell was open and it felt like homing home each time I returned. There is a cozy courtyard, bike rentals, a roof top and other patios. Great location being so close to the beach and the Miami strip but situated toward the end so it is very quiet.  Highly recommend.

The Hotel and Location itself was good, not great, but good.

The issue is that the service at this Hotel was some of the worst I’ve ever experienced. When we booked our Junior Suite for our stay we got a deal on Black Friday. But as we were staying with our daughter we chose the hotel specifically for the suite. When we arrived, we were asked to sign paperwork upon check-in. On the paperwork I noticed that we had been downgraded and moved to a king bed room without our knowledge. Then upon requesting more information about why our room was changed, we were told that the Hotel’s system overbooked and so we were moved to a different room. No one informed us prior and they did not volunteer this information until after I saw the error.

Then they wanted us to pay the same rate for the new (downgraded room) as our suite. Then the room was not ready until after 4:20 (3 hours after we were told it would be).

The stay was adequate, our toilet broke after 1 day after 2 uses. And was broken until we checked out, even after informing the front desk.

Upon check out, the staff again tried to make us pay the same rate as the suite even after speaking with the manager upon check-in. Then when I tried to verify the price and asked for the manager to call me when they had time, they never called and charged us the full price. I had to call the next business day to get the charges corrected. And then I still did not get to speak with the manager.

There were a few things about this hotel that could have been better. The main issue was the attention to detail when it came to cleaning. On the first day, housekeeping forgot to take out our garbage, which wasn’t a huge deal, but still something you’d expect to be done. The second day, I specifically asked for new tissues, but they weren’t replaced. I also noticed that one of the small hand towels and the bath mat we used after showering were missing after the room was cleaned, and they weren’t replaced.

The strangest part was that our recycling bin disappeared after they took out the trash. I’m not sure why it wasn’t put back where it belongs, but it was definitely unexpected. On top of that, I found some old towels from previous guests under the sink. I understand that it’s easy to overlook, but it’s still something that should be caught during cleaning.

That said, for Miami Beach, the value is actually pretty solid—considering the amenities and location, it feels like you’re getting more than what you paid for. If they could improve their attention to detail, it would make the stay even better. Overall, I agree this is a three-star hotel.

I recently stayed at the Lord Balfour. I like to stay “South of Fifth” in Miami Beach because I like to relax.

Lord Balfour is under new management, and I can tell you the changes are already noticeable.
For starters, the hotel is immaculate! Spotless and clean everywhere.  There was plenty of staff available to answer questions and offer assistance.

The rooms are quite nice, and up-to-date amenities in the room include the ability to stream from your personal devices to the large flat-screen TV in the room. A modern touch is usually only seen in new or recently renovated large hotel chains,.

There is a lovely courtyard with seating and quaint lighting.
The bar has a great happy hour including drink specials as well as appetizer specials for a few hours in the evening. (Try the hummus; it’s delicious.).

The hotel is right across from the beach, and your stay includes 2 complimentary beach chairs, towels, and an umbrella… DAILY…

Most important to me was how quiet the hotel was.  The hotels north of 5th tend to be rowdy, and this place was not at all. I had a great night's sleep every evening and woke up well-rested.

Housekeeping was amazingly fast for such a large space, but my room was always ready for me when I returned from the beach.

As I mentioned earlier, they have new management and have already begun implementing updates to an already great building.

Lastly, the staff.  They all were so friendly, kind, and ready to assist.

One suggestion would be to have a “Guest-Accessible” ice machine for when the bar is closed after 10pm.  A small suggestion for an otherwise amazing and rather impressive experience.

I am already looking for dates to return, as this visit was top-tier!
