Amazing place to visit.  The personal collection of Doris Duke is phenomenal to view.  Fascinating to see the photos of what inspired her and how she conveyed that in her own home.  Breathtaking views from the back lawn.  Walking in the halls of how an entirely different realm of wealth lived and collected.  So many interesting things to learn about and see.  A very unrated place to visit.  Highly recommend!

Plan ahead, tickets sell out. We bought tickets a month in advance. It is absolutely stunning and beautiful.  It is a unique historic estate where there is history everywhere you look. It's definitely a huge highlight of our trip. It's at the top of our recommendations.

If you’re interested in beautiful artefacts of Islam, then this isn’t museum you should not miss. The collection here is truly amazing and dates back almost 400 years. Everything from furniture to tiles and other works of our are on display for you to enjoy. It is extremely difficult to get tickets to this museum since they are only sold four times a year. You’ll have to plan this at least six months ahead of time.

Spectacular!!! I went with a group of friends and we had a great time. So much history behind the former residence of Doris Duke. Her love of art, starting with her visit to the Taj Mahal, shows throughout the museum. This is a must-see when visiting Hawaii.

Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art Culture & Design

I got lucky last month when the tickets dropped and were able to snag a couple of the Kama aina first Saturday $5 tickets. Since my last video the video changed to highlight how two pieces were featured in the assassin creed game. It was interesting hearing the research that went into the background decide to match the time the game was suppose to take place in. Took my labubu too!!

Went on a tour of this amazing gem. It was my second time, but because there are different docents, you hear different things each time. This was the first time we got to go on the lawn and see the rooftop gazebo area from there. Also was able to look over to the "dragon" sea wall. I hope they don't take it down- it truly is historical. I think this home was just as impressive as the Alcazar in Seville. (Today's tour with Dorothy was a little heavy the most expensive piece of art and so we had to hurry thru the other parts). the last time I came they gave a little more information about Doris Duke's life-- wish they would have done more of that today. Still it's a magical place! Incredible treasure in our backyard!

Attended an event focusing how Shangrila influenced 3 Hawaiian artists. Great lawn space for events. There were way too many people then the number of chairs. I enjoyed the Shangrila area. I doubt if Doris Duke would place a fish with teeth in her garden. I added a picture of the fish with large teeth down below. I miss seeing her furniture. Parking for the Islamic museum is by shuttle only. The neighborhood i believe does not want a lot of strangers clogging up their streets. Already, I saw cars parking too close to driveways.

First of all, I think people need to stop romanticizing the wealthy and start supporting taxing the wealthy. Like, seriously, before you visit this place, if you decide to visit this place, read about Doris Duke first. The docents here will share a great deal, especially if you ask, about the art but you have to remember that the collector of this art was an extremely wealthy heiress who could afford to purchase ancient and sacred Islamic artifacts that even museums like the NY Metropolitan Museum of Art couldn't afford. There's also some very questionable history with her and her former curator. The location is indeed beautiful but it's a museum at best and a relic of a fancy life that almost no one in Hawai'i or even the world could afford. With that having been said, the Doris Duke Foundation does fund a lot of efforts from medical research, performing arts, to children's well-being. Reservations are required to visit and children are not allowed because you're not allowed to touch anything here, not even the walls. On the day of your visit, you go to the Honolulu Museum of Modern Art, where you also have a complimentary entrance for the day, and catch a small bus to Shangri-la, where you're greeted with a beautiful and helpful fan, take it, you'll need it. At the end of your mostly self guided tour, you are given a small ice cream sandwich and water before getting back on the bus.

Amazing place! It's definitely the lesser known attraction on the island. So glad I was able to get a ticket and went to see it for myself. It's away from the actual museum, and there's a shuttle that's included in your ticket to take you from the museum to the actual spot which was a house with a huge garden. The decor of the rooms were amazing and the whole place would transport you to another world. I wouldn't spoil too much for you. You would have to go there to see it in person. Make sure you book your ticket in advance!

A cultural experience not to be missed when visiting Honolulu. It takes a little planning, but it is worth it. Only open a few days each week and reservations fill up in advance. I had been trying to go for several visits, and finally made it work. Hubby complained in advance but came along. Total duration is about 2 hours - 30 minutes each way by small bus and an hour in the museum/home which is ample. We knew very little about Islamic Art, but the collection was fascinating and substantial. The grounds themselves are enough of a reason to visit and the story behind Doris Duke was very interesting. Hubby admitted that this was a highlight of this trip and I agreed. Still got back well in time for lunch and time at the beach.

The tour was more than I could have hoped for. The guide was friendly, helpful, considerate, and helped my students to understand what they were looking at. Her knowledge helped bring the home to life. It was a bit hot, but they gave us fans and a little treat at the end to help cool us off. I loved the tour and feel so lucky to have seen it.

Absolutely amazing experience. This is a must-visit. Despite being a local and living here all my life I only got the chance to experience this place now. It was worth the wait. Breathtaking views overlooking Diamond Head, as well as Islamic architecture lining the Doris Duke estate. An insane amount of plants adorning the mosque-like buildings. I want to come back again just to be around such a beautiful place once again. The 8x8 artist exhibition here is also very inspiring and uplifting to promote local artists/performers. I hope one day I can perform and dance here in such a beautiful space. Your admission to Shangri La also qualifies you for free admission to the Honolulu Museum of Art. Definitely stop by after the tour to make your trip worth it!

Great hidden gem of a touring spot. Only thing that would have made this better was a more informative "tour " by knowledgeable docents. It's self paced but no real signage of things. The small docent talk was wonderful. And enjoyed the ice cream at the end. I'm thankful i came early in the morning as it can get hot...especially since there is no air conditioning. The added bonus is that this includes admission into the HOMA museum for the day as well. So you can enjoy this wonderful museum as well. If you are planning to have lunch at HOMA as well, would highly recommend you make reservations. So plan your day and enjoy the experience!
