CIFF has brought a great selection of features and shorts, dramas and documentaries, from Ireland to Chicago. Often the stars and film makers come to support their films. The past festival featured former president Mary Robinson.

I'm ashamed to say that this was the first year that I'd made it back to the Beverly area to see this and I'm so glad I did. Thanks to Johnny T. giving me free Yelp tickets, I caught the closing night's screening which consisted of various short films by young, independent Irish film makers. The group was quite diverse, going from the quirky to the poignant, and even had a couple of animated shorts mixed in. The one that stood out as my favorite was a film with no dialogue called "Out of the Blue". It was a cute story about a man who finds love in an old TV set floating in the ocean. He takes it home, plugs it in and finds a mermaid on the screen staring back at him. Immediately smitten, he takes the TV set with him wherever he goes, but quickly learns she's out of her element and so he decides to release her back to the water so that she may survive. Quite a beautiful tale with a somewhat unexpected ending. The theater itself was comfortable, and as a nice surprise, there's a cash bar in the lobby. I've never been to the movies and been able to bring beer to my seat before (well, not where it's been allowed, anyway). To be honest, I'd probably be giving this whole experience five stars had I gone more often (to the screenings I mean, not the bar). I may be updating my review, but for that (as we say in Chicago), "wait 'til next year!" If you're a fan of independent or foreign film of ANY genre, you owe it to yourself to try and catch at least one night of this festival in 2011. If you do, try going the first evening...if you like what you see, you'll still have five more nights ahead!

I had a great time this year at the 2012 Chicago Irish Film Fest! There was a great selection of films. I wasn't able to go every night, but when I was able to go, it was well worth it. I am not of Irish heritage and it was still a great time. Don't limit yourself, broaden your horizons. This year Moneygal was a great film, which at first I wasn't sure about, but turned out to be a delight! I also really appreciated the closing night with the multitude of short films: Tom's Sceadu, Downpour, Dark Side of the Lens, Never Ever Open It, Deep End Dance, Clockhead where my top 6, BUT they were ALL excellent! I also really appreciated meeting the film makers and to socialize with them. I recommend attending!
