Perfect? No. Pretty good? I'd say so! I had vetted out all the different ways to get around with kids in Chicago as a tourist, and ultimately between the CTA bus and L trains, as well as the Metra, there are some nice options. Note, when you have two small kids Uber/taxis are not really an option without car seats, so this is the best plan of action IMO. For starters, you can futz around with a Ventra card, or you can just pay per ride ($2.25 at time of writing) by tapping your credit card when you get on. You can also get unlimited day passes, 3 day passes, or 7 day passes. When we got into Union Station with our luggage in tow, we made our way to the transit stop nearly joining the building and patiently waited..and waited. It incredibly late and threw me off more than I thought because I was so tired, but ultimately got us there. Others were much smoother: getting from our hotel to the Children's Science Museum was wonderful, taking us right to the entrance. Worth noting the bus was five minutes early to the stop so thank god we were there or it would've been a while! (Although the Metra also goes that way, but is a farther walk from the stop.) Here's another thing; I almost always felt safe. In summer in the Loop, these are heavily trafficked, and the crowds are varied. The bus drivers don't take any crap, and honestly that helps hold everyone in line a bit so it's kinda nice. Using Google Maps, or the Transit App, or the Ventra app will help you navigate but it's really pretty easy and there are stops everywhere. Much better than my hometown of KC, and I feel comfortable using this again and again when I visit Chicago.

I'm on the #36 bus at 7:10 and the female bus driver stops the bus and goes into Dunkin Donuts for coffee and food. While we are watching her put more sugar in her coffee in a driverless bus. The rudest thing I have ever witnessed. Horrible service. Female red hair 7:10 Devon and Sheridan. I can show pictures too.

At no point should any paying customer that ride the red and blue line be greeted with homeless people sleep laying across the seats! No paying customer should be greeted with urine on the floor or blood! Should no paying customer be greeted with people smoking weed or whatever else on these trains let alone selling it. The red line train is never really clean. The floor is always sticky and smells bad! Loud music is always being played. What's the point of having K-9 services and they don't do anything. Y'all need to do better! These trains are overly disgusting and there's no sense of security

I refuse to compare the Chicago "L" to the New York City subway. I will not. To do that is literally comparing an apple to an orange and that simply is not fair. What I will do is praise the heck out of this system. It is clean, safe, reliable, and extensive. Those are my only similarities between the "L" and the subway. After that, things vary, and not just because most of the system is above ground, hence the "L" nickname. I found most people on the trains respectful. Not many panhandlers, and the rule about no bikes on the trains during peak hours is strictly enforced. I was on a train where a cyclist tried boarding with a bike and the motorman announced "No bikes during rush hour." To enforce this, the train would not move until the cyclist disembarked. That would never happen in New York City. Once you get the hang of it, navigating around the Loop is rather easy and fun. There are plenty of lines to pick from, and they all pretty much get you where you need to go downtown. Once they branch off the loop, some of the lines run express outside downtown, making it even easier to get around. From a railfans' perspective, it is an absolute delight. I found a parking garage that overlooks Tower 18 and you could easily spend several hours watching trains traverse this intersection. It is like watching vehicle traffic as trains stop to allow other trains to pass by or merge onto another track. Sometimes you can see up to four trains come together! It felt like a model train display being brought to life. I could also talk about METRA, but that is for another review.

Your drivers really need manners especially if you are advertising as a great alternative instead of driving to land marks. Your drivers are rude and truly lack empathy to help with directions. He stopped behind a bus 5 feet from the curb then began yelling for passengers to get out in the middle of the road!

My friend & I took a trip from the NW burbs via Metra with plans to ride the CTA bus from Union Station to the Chicago Auto Show. I last rode a city bus a few years ago. I was pleasantly surprised with our experience! The buses were clean and well-lit. I was most impressed with our bus drivers who were friendly and courteous. Initially, we needed help finding the correct bus and asked the driver of a different route for directions to the correct pickup spot. She was accommodating and came out of her bus to talk with another driver for help, as this was not her usual route. Our drivers were patient and assisted us with boarding info to our destination and back to Union Station. It's a convenient and inexpensive way to get around the city.

Rather than pay for parking, I opted to take the bus and train. At $5 a day, it's totally worth it. I took the bus to Navy Pier. The drivers are meh with their attitude but you can't beat the convenience, especially on the hot day I had on Wednesday. It does get crowded but to me, it beats paying $20+ taking a cab or Lyft.

The CTA is decent over all, although wait times and crowds can often be an issue. And what really bothers me and visitors that ride with me a lot is the fact the cards we pay for often will not let you through the turn style, and yet still will count it as one of your uses wasting your money! Another thing are all the people that sleep on the trains taking up seats and stinking up the cars! or worse as we saw the other day one of them waking up long enough to blow their nose onto the floor! The other night we saw someone kicking one of the windows trying to break it. And do not even get me started on all the smoking and loud music and talking on the phone that goes on. It is not a surprise that people chuckle when the announcements come on claiming no smoking or radio playing or gambling or loud talking on the phone, etc is allowed on cta vehicles as everyone knows it is always happening and nothing is ever done about it! And even funnier when they claim you will be prosecuted to the fullest lol. I mean come on. Again, nobody enforces any of it. And even if they did, the entire world knows that Chicago treats criminals like Kings and they will be let go as soon as they are caught so it is so laughable! It is a shame as they could prevent all of this but won't. And it hurts what COULD be a great, clean, enjoyable, safe transit system.
