Yelp... listen to me. There are 146 CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) El stations. This is North/Clybourn. Look at the photos, make the change suggested in the edit. Rant over. I read somewhere in the reviews that this station was renovated. Really? Are we talking only the exterior and foyer? I will give them some points for the exterior not detracting from the plaza, and the foyer right around the fare gates is plain but otherwise fine. Then we come to the station itself... The good I can say is that it's fairly well lit, didn't have trash strewn, no foul smells, and didn't feel unsafe during day and evening (don't know about night). Alas, it goes downhill from there. First, there is no digital signage in the station announcing when the next train is coming. Second, the station needs a thorough cleaning top to bottom. I'd ordinarily say a power-washing, but that won't care care of whatever goop was on the side of the escalator rail, to say nothing of the rail itself. Next, while I realize this is harder to implement, the station is deep underground, not accessible (despite having a wide gate), with narrow escalators only going up (plus, stairs are unavoidable in part, IIRC). While I am grateful for not requiring accessibility, and I have the Transit app which seems more accurate than CTA's own countdowns, all of these factors work against North/Clybourn.

CTA has a station at North and Clybourn. It had a big renovation about a decade ago and it's one of the nicer stations around here. Lots of restaurants and shopping. Area is very nice and upscale and there's lots to enjoy around it. There's an Apple store and Starbucks among others. As far as stations, this is one of the best. It serves the Red Line. This is the last station on the State Street Subway. After this it goes above ground. There's kind of a smell, but it's not as bad as some stations. Location is the best thing about it. There's lots of upscale shopping for those wanting to throw some bucks at fancy furniture and shit. Apple has a big ass nice store, and was the main reason for the improvements. There's also a Williams-Sonoma, so this is one of the bougiest stations. Even though it's nice, there can be shady characters. It's mostly safe and secure. This Line is the busiest so there's never a long wait for trains.

This stop is great for gathering my thoughts after I drop my son off at school, before I head to work. There are plenty of tables and chairs to rest at in the patio upstairs and the fountain is very calming. The stop itself is not wheelchair accessible, which is why this review only gets 4 stars, but there are bus stops on every corner so I can get my son home via bus when I pick him up. I've always had a good experience here and I enjoy the businesses in the area.

This is a very attractive renovated station, and thanks to the Apple Store next door, there's a pretty fountain plaza with patio chairs and tables in front. Lots of expensive trendy shopping right around this station. The physical part, the infrastructure is great, the problem of course is that like other CTA stations, it's staffed by CTA workers. The best of them are merely indifferent and disinterested, some are openly hostile and belligerent. If you're a tourist or visitor from out of town, you'll be more likely to get assistance from anyone not in a CTA uniform.

***This CTA station has one of the most interesting and throwback exteriors of the many train stations/stops in Chicago; this station lets out to lots of upscale retailers like Williams-Sonoma, Apple, Crate & Barrel, and much more; some of Chicago's most respected restaurants (like Alinea and Boka) are also located here as well as the famous Steppenwolf Theatre; like other CTA stations, this is an inexpensive, convenient and quick way to get around the city*** I am not sure what the parking situation is here.

This place is now 100% great for getting onto the trains. You used to get jumped by all of the Cabrini Green residents here, but now that they got rid of all of the gangbangers, this place is way more safe. There's a Starbucks on the one side. That means White people and safety. This hombre totally approves of safe travel.

I am happy to say that the North & Clybourn station is no longer dilapidated and an ugly, one-room station. Since the opening of the new Apple Store on North Avenue, money has been put into the station to re-paint, renovate the building's exterior and even add an adjacent park with a fountain. There is even free Wi-Fi in the park. If it weren't for Apple, all of this probably wouldn't have happened. Thanks Apple!

This is an interesting station that has a couple of interesting personality quirks. First off the station is located in what is now a busy and upscale retail and residential area, yet it's nice to see that platforms aren't super congested like its fellow stations further south. The new station house is bright, airy and modern and it leads to a nice public area outside next to the Apple Store. This is where the visual appeal of the station ends though. Once you go past the turnstiles in the station house, you are immediately greeted by the austere Chicago style subway stations of the 1940s. The platforms are two flights of stairs down and once at platform level, it looks exactly like the Grand and Chicago Ave stations did before their renovations...something one wouldn't have expected after seeing the nice, new station house. There is also no elevator here which is not cool either, although the layout of it seems extremely difficult to be able to accommodate, so that's unfortunate. Also, if you're getting off the train at this station, you might be better off taking the stairs instead of the escalator. North and Clybourn is home to the worlds NARROWEST escalator, and by narrow, it's to a point where it's almost comical. It is literally a foot wide, so even the trimmest of models shopping at their nearby fashion centers will have the "wide load" feel going up. Not to mention if the person in front of you is standing, there is no way you'll be able to walk around them...the escalators width is about the same as that narrow tube of fire right before Spawn arrives in hell. The station is a mere 2.8 in my opinion but 3 stars does it justice for providing a quick and convenient stop, having it be pretty low in the crime and creep factor and greeting me to a nice public space upon leaving the station.

I was here yesterday with a couple friends of mine after we got off the North Ave. bus to head up to Lawrence, and man, I hate that I haven't been to this station. It is by far, one of the best on the entire Red Line. Loved the flower and water garden in between it and some other building. Loved the exterior design of this place. I thought it was just another building, but it was actually a train station, for the Red Line. Lol.

Word on the street is a Starbucks will be moving in on the street level at this station. From my vantage point, that makes the whole station that much better. Other than that, the train gets you from point A to point B. Good enough for me.
