This is a long review -- but I feel the entire story is worth telling to anyone considering patronizing Gruen Galleries. I am a highly successful executive in River North -- albeit not a seasoned art buyer. I stopped in Gruen Galleries and saw a piece I liked. Lisa, the Director told me the artist is an 80-year-old Italian who sends his work in shipments. They were going fast. Not sure when they will receive more. She offered to bring it to my home that afternoon to see it in the surroundings and confirm it was something I wanted to purchase. Price $12,800. I agreed. They were quite pleasant in hanging the piece and agreeing to a one-week "trial". I asked for information about the artist. I did not receive anything. As I would consider a $12,800 painting to be an investment, I conducted my own research about the artist. He was born in NY and has been a resident of Chicago for many years. Lisa later clarified that he spends a lot of his time in Italy. Certainly not the way it was represented, but OK. More concerning -- the only value I could find on the internet was of his work sold at auction -- top price ever was $200. With that large disparity, I asked an art appraiser to provide an initial assessment. His view -- $500. He did clarify that the retail market is very different than the resale market -- but I couldn't quite rationalize the 6000% difference. I called them to share my findings and I asked them if they could help me reconcile the information they communicated with what was readily available via research. What happened next was truly beyond anything I've ever experienced and truly shocking given the clientele and market this gallery serves. Over the phone, Lisa told me 1) my research, and that of the appraiser, was invalid and most likely through fake websites 2) they are the best source of the value of the paintings as they are the exclusive "broker" for this artist -- they dismissed the idea of getting an independent appraisal 3) she was shocked I hired an appraiser to begin with 4) they were certainly not the gallery for me. She had her husband, Mike, immediately pick up the painting. When Mike arrived, he started telling me, again, how my actions of hiring an independent appraiser were wrong. When I told him I already discussed it with Lisa and didn't need to talk about it again -- he said, he was going to continue speaking his mind anyway. He proceeded to hurl personal attacks at me, telling me that I was "sneaky", "shady", never intended to conduct business fairly and that I had misrepresented my intentions -- on and on. He then told me they should have known who they were dealing with because I had shared with them that I had found a $250 version of a $3500 faucet for my bathroom - and the fact that I had purchased a "knock off" showed what kind of client I am. At that point, I told him to take the painting and get out of my home. He continued ranting on, discrediting my integrity and character -- I had to physically push the door closed on him as he was pushing back trying to keep the door open. He continued to yell at me through the door. He finally left when I told him I was calling security to have him removed from the building. I later spoke with Lisa. She apologized for his actions. However -- even with an apology, I can not remain silent about the threatening, rude behavior I experienced. It was truly beyond belief.

Gruen has been here forever, and it's a really gorgeous space. Spare, industrial and uncluttered, it's what a high end gallery ought to look like. I've always loved the large metal dogs that seem to be a fixture. My pal Gary Weidner had a show here - as he does occasionally - and that's always a pleasure. I'll always come back to Gruen. The staff is unobtrusive. They tend to leave you alone to ponder the art, and I prefer this. If you have a question, though, they're very helpful. This is an art gallery, people!

This gallery on Superior Street features paintings and sculpture by American and European artists. It's next to the funky metal sculpture that looks like a weird clothespin.

Went into this gallery with a good friend, a gallerist from KC, looking for artwork in my new condo a few blocks away. My friend asked if she could take a picture of some work and was granted permission. After she shared that she was in the business they rudely told her she couldn't take pictures and then didn't allow me upstairs stating it was another gallery and the owners weren't there (ummm... it's the same gallery and the owners were sitting behind their desk afraid that my friend was trying to poach artists). Their short-sightedness lost a potential buyer and offended someone who could have potentially helped them sell artwork. Rude, unprofessional and just weird.

This has to be the worst "gallery" I've ever set foot into and I've been to many around the globe. The owner, Lisa and her husband, Michael, were talking to a guy who seemed to be installing artwork when I popped in and I was uncomfortable even being there as they were talking to him like he was a slave or a dog. Sure, that's their business I guess, but it makes guests feel awkward and cold. The art seems nice and they have some good artists but some of them I've seen in other Chicago locations and in California where the staff is friendly and says hello--yes I work in the design industry. I did try to inquire about one of the pieces and Michael was very cold and just didn't seem to want to waste time with me and I had read reviews before I went it and sadly the reviews were right. Be warned, this place has also had a few customers sue them for fraud and contract issues (this is public data available on Google on the Chicago court databases and not heresay, but fact). I am going to steer clear and advise my fellow designers to do the same. If you look at the reviews on here that have been removed by Yelp, they were written by Michael G--that's one of the owners who also has posted a photo of his dogs here. He tried to post two reviews of his own gallery here. Just shady.

I had a really lovely experience at this gallery. The owners were present when I needed them but allowed me to explore on my own when I wanted to be alone. (They did explain to me that the 19th century lofted gallery space had once been a candy factory.) The natural lighting was even and perfect for viewing the canvases. I look forward to visiting again this weekend.

Fun gallery with staff who've always treated me well and been helpful when I've asked questions. I've been here on numerous occasions and always have been greeted / treated professionally. Cute little dogs too - big fan of dog fans!

I visited, or let me say TRIED to visit the Gruen Gallery today with 6 of my best AP Art Alumni who are about to head to art school this fall. The minute we entered, a rude man stopped us from coming in and said "We aren't giving tours today!" and pointed us to the door. He didn't allow us into his gallery!? I am pretty sure the artists displaying work here would be disappointed to know that the gallery owner would rather the gallery have no customers than an art teacher and her aspiring students. My husband and I are art purchasers and we will NEVER step foot into this gallery again! Since when can artists afford to be selective about who views their work?

I am very disappointed as to what this gallery has become. I have a few pieces by an artist they previously carried so I decided to see what they currently have. The collection on view seems mundane and disjointed in high contrast to the collection years ago. I was treated extremely rude from the first point of contact of the owner and easily dismissed as not a serious buyer. I would not recommend this gallery for viewing or buying. P.S. They didn't even remove the two small dogs in the gallery that were following and barking at me.

I recently visited this gallery and the customer service is completely poor. The younger woman (she had red hair) who works there just stared at me with an uninviting look and didn't say a word. It made me feel really uncomfortable. I think every business, especially an art gallery, should know that customer service is key to getting sales. Unfortunately even though you have a business that doesn't mean that you know how to treat your customers. Actually, if you are poor in customer service you should just close your store. I would suggest extensive and thorough customer service training for this woman or just fire here because she looks unhappy with her entire life!
