Hairpin Arts Center is located right on the border of Avondale & Logan Square in a convenient walking distance to a million eateries & bars, including Crown Liquors Tap Room across the street which could make for a fun pairing with Hairpin Arts. My friend and I went to an exhibit on Chicago Hip Hop at Hairpin and had some fun. Hairpin isn't a huge gallery plus it's big enough to fit a decent amount of work. Admission was free for our exhibit and I imagine it is most of the time. While we were there, one of the OG Chi graffiti artists was present and discussed things with us a bit. We had a fun time going to the exhibit, the staff member working was friendly & eager to get us to go to other events plus I got some pretty dope pictures of the artwork.

We attempted to contact them a couple of weeks ago about setting up an event there. They said they were busy and would get back to us. After constantly reaching out without any response except "we are busy and will get back to you" we gave up. Over the last week we called 19 times and left 19 messages and emailed and NOTHING. I hope this was just a one time mishap with them

Hairpin Arts Center is very dear to my heart. Not only does it host a lot of social-justice oriented events, but it was the home of my first co-curated exhibition, and most recently, my wedding!! The space is located on the 2nd floor, elevator accessible, and is shaped like a flatiron, so the room is super wide when you enter, and gets narrower as you go further in. Floor-to-ceiling windows, great light arrangements to work with, and a small outdoor patio if you want to do cocktails or photos outside. The space does not have a kitchen, nor a full staff, so this space is great if you're into a very customizable, DIY wedding, which we were totally fine with. We got catered food, hired a few servers & a bartender through our own connections, got our family & friends to help us decorate, and ordered chairs & tables to be delivered to the space. Gretchen (who runs the space) and her two staff members were super helpful in letting us in a day before for the chair & table drop offs, to decorate, and to rehearse. We had over 100 people for our big day and it went surprisingly perfect. So grateful for this space!

I've worked with them in the past to host events at their space and have always had a good experience. Recently I looked into their space for a fundraiser I'm helping plan in December. Between 9/20 and 9/29 I called them 19 times, left multiple voicemails, and sent 3-4 emails and still have yet to hear anything. I spoke with someone twice and each time she said she'd get to my request within the next day or so. Very unresponsive, a huge issue when planning an event.

This place is a wonderful and bright venue! I hosted my wedding here and it was unique and beautiful. There are a lot of things you have to do extra, however. There is no kitchen and not much when it comes to bar set up. Although they do have 2 make-shift bars that you can work with. But if you are able to put in the extra work, it will exceed your expectations, especially if you are putting together a wedding on a budget. Do expect to hire people for clean up as well as to manage for you as well. They are very limited on what they are able to contribute.

At first glance the Morris B. Sachs building, a.k.a. the "Sears Tower of Avondale," might look like a little brother of Wicker Park's more famous Coyote Building. But this place is growing up fast, and for all the visual drama of the Coyote howling at the moon, the real place to howl at the moon and actually be heard is at the new Arts Center on the 2nd floor of the Sachs building. This space, abandoned for some twenty years, has now been immaculately restored, and the acoustics (though still a work in progress) are just awesome. With windows lining the entire south and northeast sides, the room defers its beauty to the view of Milwaukee, Diversey, and Kimball outside. In turn, the sun (depending on the day) offers its rays to bring this huge triangular gallery of local art to light. It seems like the music and live performance programming is beginning to pick up steam, and there's an actual piano here. In short, if I could be an abstract entity like "art itself," I would certainly want to be centered here at the Arts Center.
