2025 Review! Same Fest, New Location! Tacos & Tamales Fest is now on Blue Island Ave between Wolcott & Ashland. Their new location is so much better to space out the crowd, offer better street parking/access to public transportation, and allows for more vendors! They had the similar mix of local businesses, corporate freebies, artist tents, and (3) music stages; but, I'm already looking forward to seeing how they continue to grow next year.

I checked out this festival for the first time this year, a mixed experience. Good: the food was tasty with the ability to sample multiple places from all around the city in one place, and they had a fun collection of art and craft vendors as well. The space was fun under a train bridge with a lot of creative graffiti. However this was offset but the very packed crowds (hard to get around), very long lines (in the heat with no coverage from the burning sun), and general lack of parking for 1/2 mile around. For someone that doesn't like packed crowds it was a difficult experience, but I'm glad we went to check it out once.

I usually skip food festivals because I hate crowds, but this is one I'd been looking forward to for weeks. I don't eat good tamales very often and it was very convenient to have one location with all of the local venders so that I could try multiple restaurants at once. -Narrowing down which restaurant was my favorite to avoid future disappointments. Hands down, Yvolina's was my favorite. The chicharron tamale with green mole sauce was still in my mind when I woke up this morning. But sadly, I had to eat a grapefruit instead. ::sad face:: They run about $10 each, but are very large. I did also enjoy Yvolina's Chicken Tinga tamale, but the chicharron is the one I'd go back for. Didn't love the churros from Xurro, but I'm a pastry chef and make churros quite often. Maybe I just prefer my own. I ordered the churro s'more and wouldn't order again. It was all way too dry. Not enough chocolate either. There were many kinds of venders. If tamales aren't your thing, you aren't out of luck. With tacos, tortas, burritos, quesadillas etc.. sold up and down the streets, there's something for everybody. My only regret was not ordering the street corn that everyone seemed to me walking around eating. As much of a pain it was to be raining, it was the perfect time to go. The crowds were very minimal. It was still a lively bunch though. Many people dancing in the streets as the music blasted in the air. I very much enjoyed my evening and will definitely return next year. Parking is a bit of a beast. Prepare to have to park a bit far and walk.

Unfortunately I didn't get the chance to taste any of the foods and drinks due to the over crowdedness. I arrived about 7pm (an hour before closing on that Sunday) and it was "over crowded". Regardless if the even was optionally free (without a donation), they should look into creating some sort of mechanism to cut off the number of attendees because it was a BIT MUCH. I'm not overly particular about crowds but do have a limit just like most folks. It was soooo crowded, anyone attending can't make out the individual food lines because people were literally at a stand-still shoulder to shoulder. Yes I was disappointed because I really had a taste for some authentic Mexican food but had to leave 15min after arriving due to the event being over crowded. If the organizers would be look into monitoring and facilitating the number in attendance I think this would help greatly.

First off the event is free, yet when you get there you don't get the option because you are asked to donate. That in itself was not a big deal when I bought my drink from a Michialada vendor I was directed to go to a tent next door and purchase a beer then bring back to them and they would fix the Michilada for us, not realizing that it would be an additional exorbant price. My Jaw dropped, there was no price or information that that was the process, if I had known I would only have purchased the beer and save us alot of money. I have never posted a y kind of review good or bad but this was a bit deceprive. And it was not tacos and tamales there were 2 vendors selling tamales, very dissatisfied! Felt cheated.

A great festival for lovers of Mexican cuisine, but beware that the security is careless. Leave your pepper spray at home because they will take it to hold onto, and then give it back to someone else. The service from vendors was fantastic though! Expect to pay a little more than you'd think.

We were visiting Chicago and planning to spend 4+ days in the city, so we were looking for stuff to keep us busy. An internet search turned up the Tacos y Tamales Festival, we also later saw it advertised in a Starbucks, so we decided to come here and try it. We had a good time overall at this festival and the entrance fee was only a $5 requested donation. They had probably 10 food trucks or food vendors, 1/2 dozen vendors selling shoes, blankets, audio CDs and art, 2 beer tents, one of which also offered micheladas, a limited number of tables to sit or stand at and eat, and on the main street there was a DJ playing at one far end, and the main stage with live bands and entertainment at the other. The entertainment was great while we were here, the first group being a Colombian band with a solid trumpet section, and the second being a Carlos Santana tribute group with a guitarist who performed a nearly spot on imitation of the licks Santana is known for. Why I can only give this festival 3 stars is because it was PACKED with people, yet there was a relatively small number of food and drink vendors to serve them all. The line for one particular tamale vendor was nearly 30 minutes long just to place an order, and they'd run out of certain dishes fairly early in the evening. We came here on Sunday, which was the last night of this 3 day festival and were a little surprised that some of the food vendors weren't better staffed than they were...After all, by day 3 they should know the volume of customers to expect and how much food they'd need to prepare and serve. Because the main street this festival is held on was so packed, it was also difficult for me to make my way through the crowd to one of the beverage tents which was located at one far end, and then return with drinks to the tamale tent where my partner was waiting in line, toward the middle. Lots of getting bumped by people trying to work their way through the tightly packed crowd and food vendor lines, and lots of spilled drink as a result. While I think this festival is good, IMO it could be much better, primarily by spreading out and making the main thoroughfare longer by extending it a few more blocks, or putting more food and drink vendors on the side streets off the main thoroughfare.

I came all the way from San Antonio, Texas to come to the Taco y Tamale Festival. In Texas, I've been to the Taco Fest, and the Tamale Fest, but never a Taco y Tamale Festival! It seemed a bit presumptuous to lump two entirely different Mexican foods into one festival, so I had to check it out. The city had shut down Pilsen street, and rerouted the buses around this street festival. They had a variety of local taquerias out there selling tacos and tamales, but nothing too innovative. The prices were cheap, and there were plenty of different things to try. My favorite part of the festival was the artists here- they were selling a bunch of different shops, t-shirt vendors, jewelers, and people just selling weird stuff, with a taco flare. The event was well organized, with a musical act at either end of the street fest. They rotated out the bands every half hour or so. My fav was a dozen piece Banda band who played music that you usually here in Guadalajara. You'd think Pilsen would be the Czech side of town, since there's a town in Czech Republic with the same name, but it's the Mexican side of town now- even the manhole covers are styled after the Mexican calendars! Bueno! The festival had plenty of port-a-potties and felt safe, with ample off duty police officers. In all, I got a handful of different tacos, and a lackluster tamale (our South Texas tamales are vastly superior!) and got to listen to a bunch of free music, so it was a great success overall!

Many of the CHicago festivals I've gone to before over the years. Not this one though. It was my first time ever. It was a little rainy but comfortable as in the temperature was not too hot. Heard some good music and saw young peoples cultural dances. Got tacos from one of my favorites Don Pedro's carnitas!! I never noticed it before but with all the CHicago festivals some of the streets are wider and narrower. I mention it because the flow of the foot traffic seemed more congested vs if the street had been wider.

I would have expected the festival to be larger. The food available I thought didn't represent Pilsen well. They only had a few restaurant about 5 and about 5 food trucks. The restaurants available were some well named ones that I've tried before so I know they were good but I wanted to see some new comers that could show case what they can do with tacos and tamales.
